i was wonder if anyone know a program to set u a vlan it needs to support windows 98 and be free i know of one but its not win98 compatibale

the reason is that me a a few freind are goning ot have a lan party but 2-3 cant bring there comps this was no prmblem till one of them said that he cant bring his extras (4) so the 2-3 no longer could have copms but they can play at there house so if i can get a vlan setup we could play :D :D :D :D :D :D

also if u do know about these and used one do they give lan speeds or just your internet speed i have 7mb internet so im fine with speed with one has dailup and it he got a vlan up i could give him some movies and music that he so wants

VLAN is a way to segregate a single phsyical LAN into multiple segments, or VLANs. I think from what you're saying that you actually want to do the opposite -- VPN, or virtual private network. If you have a powerful router, such as a m0n0wall-based firewall, you could simply turn on PPTP and create a few accounts for your buddies. However, if you don't have such a device, you could use Hamachi which is free. Keep in mind though that there's CPU overhead associated with software-based VPNs, so m0n0wall (or other free VPN concentrator) would be the best option overall if your networking knowledge is strong enough.

I don't really know what to tell you. Windows 98 is a security nightmare since it's based on DOS code and to make matters worse, MS no longer supports it with security patches. As a result, software specifically for the DOS-based Windows family will continue to get more scarce as time goes on.

What type of router do you have at the edge of your network?

Yes, I understood that. If I thought you were on the same LAN as them, why would I be asking about your router? ;)

Do you have any extra, old PC's laying around? Even if they're really outdated, they might be the answer to your problems.

Just buy one cheap at a local thrift shop or something, then fix it up. Add a couple of $5 NICs, install m0n0wall, and you've got yourself a high-powered router with VPN capabilities for only a few bucks.
