i dunno, i would just make a seperate partition for pagefile, 1536mb i think for 1gb of ram, so 3.72gb for pagefile with 2gb of ram, so make a new partition thats 4gb and have it for pagefile, thats only if you have the space, i dont know if you can afford to have 4gb for pagefile, i have a 2gb partition for pagefile, its on the same HDD as windows, but i sure do see an increase in speed. Damn, just seen that pic you posted above showing task manager, is your computer running extreamly slow, i mean 100mb ram at startup , i think you should get 2GB of ram, but you also probs need to do a nice fresh and clean install of windows xp, how longhave you been using that instalation of windows xp for?
How to make new pagefile? well do you know how to make a new partition, you need a program like Partition Magic 8, although most people will flame me for reccommending Partition Magic 8 as its preety crap , using somthing like paragon partition manager, i think thats what it's called, first you need to disable your pagefile on Dirve c:, to do this go to my computer, right click it and click properties, go to the advanced tab, then settings in the performance box, click on advanced, then in the virtual memory box at the bottom click change, click on the drive that says has the paging file, then click no paging file, then click set, and ok, you will then have to restart your computer, ok you seem to have alot of space, Try paragon partition manager, now have you got any free unpartitioned space on your HDD that you would normally use as backup? if so, right click on that unpartitioned space and then click on create, then in the box that says new size, change that number so that its round about 4GB, type the volume name as SWAP, then change the systen type to NTFS and press ok, dont click on surface test, at the top left click apply, now if you dont have any free unpartitioned space, make sure that on one of your partitions you have at least 4GB free space, click on the partiton and then click resize/move, then in free space after box, enter a sum thats around 4GB, click ok, on this free space you may have to format it, click on it and then click create and do the same steps as above for unpartitioned space except use all that partition you just made. Right, once that partition is created, restart your computer, right click on my computer, click advanced, then settings in performance, then click on the advanced tab, then click change, select the partition names SWAP, click on custom size, set the initial and max size to about 3072mb, click set then click ok. hope that helps, sorry if its confusing, i tryed my best
Ok, when you have 2 GB of RAM you A) do not need a PF anywhere near 2GB and B) you don't need it at all. I know this as a fact because I run with a 256 MB page file. I only do that because at some times in BF2 it goes over 2 GB and the game crashes out. But, unless you get another GB of RAM don't even think about disabling the PF, you will run out of RAM constantly. And, as far as the partitioning is concerned, he doesn't really need to, especially if he plans on upgrading to 2 GB in the future.
even with 2GB of ram the page file is still used, also pagefile works better when its not on the same drive or partition as windows. Well if he gets 2GB of ram, he should at least have Pagefile of 256mb. I have 1Gb of ram, and at start up, nearly 200mb of pagefile is used along with about 200mb of ram. I thought pagefile was for things like windows system files, i never knew when playing games data for games goes into there too :s.
you guys pf is at 256mb?, my pf is around 550mb at start up, without any games running :s I'll try that pf partitioning thing(thanks Willz:good, and also get a 1gb ram (i'm assuming it should be the same stats as my current ram for better performance)-PC3200, DDR, 400Mhz
Its not running extremely so, it can be fast at times, like I said, I have a bunch of things running in the background I don't think I'll do a fresh install, I run defrag everyday, run spyware and virus scanners once a week, and I also have "Advance System Optimizer", which gets rid of uneccessary files, registry, and folders; plus I don't have the winXP disk
no, i dont belive that it will perform slower with more ram, i would think it should perform faster when multitasking and stuff like that. Hey i used to use this program called System Mechanic, there is a free 30 day trial of System Mechanic 6 pro, it's preety good, packed with tools and also has this memory tool to defrag memory and free loads of memory, i think i had 300mb memory free and the traget was about 630, preety good app, worth a try :good:
Id never disable a pagefile no matter how much RAM you have. What if you run out of memory, Windows wont be happy at all. Also to be using 90% (900mb in your case!) of your memory immediatly after rebooting isnt right. You must be running more background programs than is needed. It came up in the Linux forum the other day how Windows uses the pagefile all the time (whereas Linux doesnt), so no matter how much RAM you've got Windows will always like some pagefile. To get the most out the page file its best to stick it on a separate drive to windows. I dont think putting it on another partition on the same drive as windows will increase page file performance. I cant find anywhere talking about xp with more than 1gb ram. I know we had a topic going on these forums 2-3 years ago but I cant find it. I found one of me moaning about 1gb Corsair XMS being £330 in the UK and £80 in Canada!
yea page files are extra ram that windows makes on your hardrive but its slower than normal ram and it is only used if your runout of normal
Whats wrong? Page file is actually treated as ram, it is always used by windows, but is also there for when you run out of main ram, it does run better on a different partition to windows or a diffierent HDD even.
well, set the inistal and max to about 500mb, the reason i said 3072 is because i did, your amount of ram (2048 i think x 1.5 = 3072), i got this from a pagefile guide that i downloaded, but you have 1gb of ram, set your page file to about 1050mb initial and max, see what you think, i dont know if you will agree that you get a performance boost, but there should be.
I set both at 1535, but I see tht the CPU usage is sometimes more than usual Is the bigger you set it the better?; I have 7.19gb of total size for this partition located on a different hd
resize the pagefile partition to 2gb, i dunno why your cpu usage is jumping :s, i followed a guide, this is were i got the info about pagefile from, it's downloadable off torrent sites like mininova, try look for it, its called Optimizing Virtual Memory. Well i dunno if the bigger you set it is better, i suppose it only needs to be about 1gb, well 2gb as i said.
