    Firewall Distribution

Ok, I am trying to sort out which Linux firewall distribution will best suit my needs. At the moment I have a Smoothwall, which works pretty well for me. My biggest problem with it is the lack of a built in client-server VPN solution (at least as far as I can tell). My biggest priorities are...

    ethernet cards

My bad, I did mean Smoothwall. I've been working with too many Sonicwalls at work I guess...

    ethernet cards

Wow, that is very odd. I would suspect it is a problem in the router configuration in Server 2003. You seem pretty knowledgeable so you very well may have tried this but I'll say it anyways. Open the Routing and Remote Access MMC and make sure both interfaces are configured properly under IP...

    Dual Channel or More?

Well, it was the daily deal on the CPU email which is usually pretty damn good. Today was 4 gigs of laptop DDR2 for $70.

    Dual Channel or More?

Ok, at the moment I have 2 GB of Patriot DDR2. Newegg is running a deal on a Patriot 4 GB kit that looks mighty nice to me. my question is, if I get it, should I run 6 gigs or just 4 in dual channel?

    Custom Kernel

Ok, I think I can manage that. Any ideas on dual monitors? when I run the nvidia-settings thingy in the old kernel and enable the second monitor as a Twinview it tells me it can't enable it and asks if I want to delete that metamode.

    Custom Kernel

OK, so I installed the new HWF kernel. The install appeared to work fine, so I went on. I could not get the Nvidia drivers to install properly, so I decided to boot back into the default kernel. Despite having Nvidia drivers and the exact same xorg.conf file as it did before my dual monitors no...

    The Official HWF Kernel Repo

Ok, so if Mint is a repackage of Ubuntu and you have a kernel for Ubuntu does that mean I can use this kernel in Mint (sorry if I sound like I have no idea what I'm talking about, it's probably because I don't)? Or should install Gutsy in my spare partition to make things easier on myself?

    The Official HWF Kernel Repo

Well, I currently have Vista installed to run DX10 games. Seeing as how neither Flight Simulator X or Lost Planet runs properly on Vista, I think I have a free 40 GB partition.

    DHCP Refresh

Ok, and Ubuntu (and consequently Mint) is Debian based, correct?

    DHCP Refresh

    Ok, thanks.

    The Official HWF Kernel Repo

Ok, so, would you recommend that I use this as a secondary operating system to my current Mint installation. As you know I'm new to Linux and am definitely not prepared for building and installing drivers and the like. Would this hinder my ability to install things such as Java support, Flash...

    Live CD

I use live CDs mainly to restore Grub when I reinstall a broken installation (read all installations) of Windows. Other than that distros like Backtrack and Knoppix STD (security tools distribution) are nice for testing security, cracking Windows passwords, cracking WEP encryption, and the like.

    DHCP Refresh

Ok, I am wondering if there is a linux command (of course there is, there is a linux command for everything) that will refresh my IP. I want something basically the same as "Repair" in Windows (well, just the renewal of IP, I don't care about clearing caches and such) or ipconfig /release-renew.

    new router

I don't use VOIP, so all that is over my head, but, uhh... yea. What he said.

    new router

I would stick to making your own router. I am running Smoothwall on a machine I got for free. I have 2 network cards in it and then a switch to split the connection inside the network. It works like a charm and gives you all the functionality you need. Take a look at Smoothwall and then if it...

    New Linux Install

Ok, so it took a reinstall with both of my new monitors connected, but TwinView is working flawlessly now. I am running Mint and I have to say, I really love it. I never got around to even running the live CD of Fedora or SUSE, but I am happy with what I have, and I don't see myself changing to...

    crysis & xp = bad?

From what I understand this is just a really good graphics game. It is designed for the next generation of hardware. It uses a brand new engine for tomorrow's hardware, so I guess that is your answer. My friend was telling me that a test rig with maxed out hardware (SLI 8800s, quad core, gigs...

    RAM Upgrade

Nothing really sticks out to me. Thats not to say that nothing there can be optimized, just to say that I can't give you a definite answer on it. You may be able to lower timings slightly but it depends on the RAM. I personally would not recommend it as screwing with timings is generally a pain...

    dual monitors

I run dual monitors and as far as I know this is not possible. Most games will confine the mouse to the active game screen and those that won't will exit full screen when you click on the other desktop. Sorry.
