Well 512mb is actually ok for XP as long as you dont fill it up with loads of startup programs and things like that.
Sounds like it is it's own boot manager, so all it does is put the Vista and linux boot info into its own boot manager.
I dont think it is possible to get the Vista bootloader to let you load into Ubuntu.
