I've found Chrome to be much faster when browsing but use Firefox because of all the web development tools available.

You have "unchecked" the boxes? Shouldn't they be "checked" instead, if you want the history to clear when you close Firefox?
have you ticked the "Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected" option? other wise I think you have to do it manually.
