If you can access the drive on another system backup any important data and then reformat again, which should fix the problem or try this first...
I must say thats a killer system :) though you may want to get the newer NEC drive.
I think maybe you have the wrong drivers installed? you would be better of with a USB 2.0 PCI Card.
make sure all the cables are connected but it sounds like the HD is gone as bios does not detect it.
Sorry about the late reply :) sounds like a compatibility issue but let us know if you got it fixed or not.
Test the motherboard outside of the case to verify that the motherboard is not shorting to the case and causing the problem.
also you may want to consider Samsung, the drives are very quite! I think 80GB drives are around £40 but spend the extra £20 to get 200GB HD,...
