Asus A7V8X-X, please help!

Hello, I’m having a little trouble with an Asus A7V8X-X motherboard.

The problem manifests itself whenever I turn on the PC, the system refuses to POST and emits a single one second beep repeated at intervals of one second through the case speaker until the system is switched off. Also when ever a live power lead is connected the system fires itself up with the above symptoms, before I’ve had a chance to press the “on” switch. This happens regardless of how the system was previously turned off, either by pulling out the power lead or holding down the “on” button for more that 6 seconds.

The problem started when I fitted a new, and quieter, cooling fan and heat-sink unit to the processor and swapped an LG IDE DVD drive for a brand new LG IDE DVD-RW drive. Up until then the PC had given 2 years of faithful, problem-free service.

I have looked up the beep codes for the Award Bios on the motherboard and a single beep continuously repeated every second indicates a memory or graphics card error. I have tested the Processor, the new cooling unit, the new DVD-RW, the RAM sticks and the graphics card in another PC and all function perfectly. I have also tried fitting a different power supply to the system but this had no effect.

I have tried testing the offending motherboard on a sheet of anti-static matting with only the power supply, processor, cooling unit, graphics card, RAM and monitor connected. This test produced the symptoms described above.

I have also tested the motherboard in skeleton mode (with only a graphics card, processor, cooling unit, RAM, HDD, monitor, keyboard and mouse attached) and had the same symptoms.

I suspect that the power management circuitry has been damaged as when I fitted the new cooling unit the screwdriver I used to lock the heat-sink clamps in-place slipped and struck the board between the socket A or 462 and the DDR DIMM 1 module. Does anyone else out there have any ideas as to what else could cause this problem or any possible solutions aside from investing in a new motherboard? The complete system spces are outlined below, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Jezhead.

System Specs:

Motherboard: Asus A7V8X-X
Processor: AMD 2100XP
Cooling unit: Foxconn CMA-AZ-1B
Graphics card: ATI Radeon Sapphire 9200pro 256Mb
RAM: 2x 256MB DDR modules
HDD: 1x Maxtor 80GB, 1x Maxtor 20GB
DVD-RW: LG GSA4163
DVD: LG generic DVD/CD player (IDE)

Yea I would imagine that it was damaged by the screwdriver. Unless you can find the damage and fix it I think a new motherboard is the way to go.
