Chasing the Wireless 1-GBPS Dream: Link Speed vs. Real-World Throughput

Hey everyone, I’ve been tinkering with my home network setup for the last few weeks and I’ve hit a bit of a wall that I’m hoping some of the veterans here can shed some light on. I recently finally got a multi-gig fiber line installed, and like many of you, I’ve become slightly obsessed with seeing those “advertised” numbers actually show up on my wireless devices.

I’m currently running a Wi-Fi 6 setup with a high-end router and a matching client card. When I check my network properties, the link speed consistently shows 1.2Gbps or even higher when I’m in the same room. However, in practice—whether I’m doing a local transfer from my NAS or a standard speed test—the throughput seems to peak right around 650 to 750Mbps.

One specific point I’ve been researching is the “protocol overhead” involved in wireless standards. I’ve read that even when your hardware is theoretically capable of Wireless 1-GBPS, the actual data payload is significantly lower because of the way Wi-Fi manages traffic and interference. But is the gap really supposed to be this large? I’ve spent the better part of three nights shifting my router antennas by millimeters and scanning for DFS channels like I’m trying to contact a satellite, yet that 1,000Mbps barrier remains elusive.

I’ve always been a “wires for everything” kind of person, but since my new laptop doesn’t even have an Ethernet port, I’m trying to see if I can truly replicate a wired experience without the clutter. It feels like I’m so close, yet the physics of the environment just won’t let me cross the finish line.

Has anyone here actually managed to see a consistent, real-world 1-GBPS transfer over a wireless connection in a normal home environment, or is that number strictly for lab conditions and marketing boxes?
