Choosing A Gaming Laptop.

Good afternoon,

I’ve been recently convincing myself to buy a gaming laptop and I’m struggling with the different specs and reviews and hoped anyone could give advice from use of something in the region I’m looking at.

Budget ~£1,000-1,200
Usage - Gaming, some light weight MMO + fps (including through a 4K TV)
Monitor - 17", IPS if possible or a decent TN panel, brightness not the biggest deal as to use inside primarily.
Portability not an issue
Gfx - GTX1060 ideally, allowing for a bit of VR and connecting to TV for gaming, 4k if it’d take it)
Trackpad - Not too bothered as I’ll use a mouse 99% of the time.
Keyboard - prefer numpad and decently placed enter/shift/arrow keys
Storage SSD (M.2 nvme ideally) along with larger HDD
CPU - i5/i7, believe they aren’t massively impactful for gaming and both capable.
RAM 8GB+

So far I’ve found the following options which I’m pondering (and wishing Black friday was nearby)

Any help appreciated, I’m not the best at spending money and it could well be months before I commit if let to myself…

Regards

Rob

For that budget and use, your choice is fine.

  • GTX 1060 is the sweet spot — just make sure it’s the 6GB version, not 3GB.

  • CPU-wise, i7-7700HQ vs i5 won’t matter much for gaming, so don’t overpay just for the i7.

  • Out of your links, the Acer Predator Helios 300 is the best all-rounder, but it’s also the priciest.

  • The MSI GP72 is decent, but I’d avoid the 1060 3GB if you can.
