heatsink board

hi i need a p4 pci-e motherboard.

can someone check this to see if it i ok?

http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=11159&GroupID=1093

i think it is p4 pci-e, but where do u put the heatsink? it looks odd?

can any1 help?

cheers

The new Pentium coolers (with LGA775 sockets) screw into 4 holes around the socket. LGA775 is not compatible with older Socket 478 CPU’s, FYI.

What CPU do you have now?

so what i need a new heatsink/fan for this board?

i need the old type of board where - u put the heatsink in and strap it in and the fan is screwed into the heatsink

what is the name of these boards?

i have a p4 2.6ghz

i think i need a Socket 478

can u get these pci-e?

i cant see any

The socket on the older Pentium 4’s is Socket mPGA (micro Pin-Grid Array) 478, or Socket 478 for short. To my knowledge, there is NO PCIe board with the older socket 478 on them. The retention bracket surrounded the CPU and was where the heatsink would clip on.

To use that board, you’d need a new CPU as the socket is entirely different than what you have now. It is physically, not to mention electrically incompatible with what you have now.
LGA775 has 775 pins on it that are in the socket, not on the CPU.

Again, there’s no Socket 478 motherboard with PCIe in it. You either need to buy a new CPU, or not upgrade.

thanks

is there a board i can buy for my p4 2.6ghz that IS pci-E, then?

and i would need a new heatsink/ fan?

what is the name of the heatsink/fan/cooler whatever i need for this new type of board, and what is the socket type of the board?

thanks

is the p4 size different?

coz all it says on sites is compatible processors: pentium 4, - how do u tell the difference?

HELP!!!

i have a P4 (all P4s are the same and will fit into any board saying p4 compatible on it yes or no?)

i have a PCI-E graphics card

i need to buy a new motherboard that will fit a P4 and a PCI-E gfx card- what kind of board am i looking for??

cheers

do i need to buy a new p4 AND a new motherboard to work this PCI-E gfx card?

There are 3 different Pentium 4 sockets:

Socket 423: 1.3-2.0GHz
Available Cores: Wilamette

Socket 478: 1.6-3.2GHz
Available Cores: Wilamette, Northwood, Prescott (not designed for Socket 478)

Socket 775: 2.6GHz-3.8GHz
Available cores: Prescott, Presler, Conroe

Now, as you can see, there is some overlapping. However, by the way you’re giving information, it seems that you have an Socket 478 CPU.

The CPU speed does not directly correlate to what socket the CPU uses.
Again, given what you’re looking for, a Socket 478 motherboard with PCIe DOES NOT exist.

With your situation, you have a couple of options:

1.)Get an AGP card
-or-
2.)Get an LGA775 CPU

thanks mate ordered a p4 3ghz lga775 and a skt775 mb with pci-e

thats me i think cheers!

Did you get some DDR2 as well? You will need that as DDR and DDR2 are NOT compatible.

the board says supported ram: DDR2 SDRAM

i have these choices to choose from, what kind should i get?

DDR2 533 - PC4200
DDR2 667 - PC5400
SDRAM - PC100
SDRAM - PC133

cheers for any help

You have to get DDR2. SDRAM (PC100/PC133) isn’t an option because it’s not supported by the chipset and is physically and electrically incompatible with DDR2.

The PC4200 will fit the bill just fine, although if you think you’ll be overclocking, the PC5400 might not be a bad idea.

ok cheers, can u tell me if this would do?

OCZ 1GB Kit (2x512MB) 240Pin PC2-4200 533MHz Dual Channel DDR2

Yes.
