right, i kind of forced myself to buy the better stuff in stead of saving my money, for once in my life i have spent on the good stuff.. or so i believe..

i just ordered:

An Antec P160 ATX Tower Case With USB/1394/Audio
Gigabyte GA-7N400PRO2 nForce 2 8xAGP Ultra400 400 FSB DDR400 IEEE
4 x Corsair XMS 256MB DDR400 / PC3200, non-ECC, Unbuffered

it was expensive… and believe me i am cringing at the amount it’s cost me lol

please tell me i made a good choice.

(thats all to go with 2 x 60GB Excelsor 7200rpm + LG 8X DUAL DVD-RW + LG 16X DVD + Cooler Master 3200+ + 1.44Floppy + 21" TFT Screen + ATI Radeon 9600XT 128mb)

The only suggestion I’d have done is gone with 2x 512MB of the Corsair XMS.

yeh, well i’ve got other machines that can use it if i need anything larger than 1gb.

also just to ask whats the difference between: CL3 / CL2.0 / CL 2.5 e.t.c?

mine is 2.5?

C.L. is CAS Latency. The lower, the better. 2.5 is pretty typical for DDR.

Set it to CAS 2.5 or 2.0. Don’t do CAS3, because it causes trouble with the nForce 2 chipset, and it’s also the slowest setting.

The only real thing that bothers me with this setup are the HDDs.

I only buy Western Digital.

These things are built to be abused.

If a bomb powerful enough to destroy all life on Earth would explode right now, two things would remain:

  1. Mosquitos
  2. Western Digital Hard Drives.

well, my hard drives are great, they cost me £32 each, they have a 3 year quarantee (by then ill have new one’s)..

they run perfectly.. are very quiet and i am generally very impressed with them. although only a 2mb cache and not ur typical WD: 8mb they are incredibly good quality.

and yes i’m sure they won’t last as long as a western digital, but i have to say, if i am to buy another hard drive soon, it will be a excelsor again.. because the quality : price ratio is just brilliant.

you should try and review one.

also.. i edited my order.. i’m now getting: 2 x 256mb Corsair pc3200 and a 512mb chip of kingston pc3200.. the corsair is CL2.5 and the kingston is CL3.. i’ll put the kingston in first and clock it to 2.5, then add the corsair.

next month i’m going to get a: new processor and a new primary hard drive preferably around 160GB. processor wise i’m not sure, i presume my Gigabyte will be able to hold any of the new processors coming out.. (3400+?) or higher.. with bios updates?

just to ask, since the AMD 64Bit’s have come out.. will there be any more new non-64bit processors.. IE a 3400+ or something?

From what I gather, AMD is supposed to release a low-end 32-bit Athlon in Socket 754 or something. But for the most part, they’re pushing 64-bit.

ok, just to ask my new motherboard i have ordered (my Gigabyte7n400 PRO 2)
does it support over 400mhz fsb? i know it does 400mhz, but on the gigabyte website.. under the bios updates for the motherboard it says:

“fixed 433mhz FSB memory problems” or something.. i am assuming this means that it wupports over 400mhz fsb.. or will do with new bios updates?

Well the 3 year warranty…

The idea in a hard drive is not its quietness or its speed really.

What’s important is the data that is on it, and that’s why, IMHO, you gotta go with the most reliable.

In any case, if your happy with what you got, that’s the important thing since it’s your money.
