Just upgraded to a Athlon XP 2500+ / SL-75FRN2 MBoard

Hello everyone.

I just bought the following;

BARTON DEAL
SL-75FRN2 mother board
AMD Athelon XP 2500+ CPU
Infinion 512mb Ram (recommended for this board by NCIX.COM rep)

The install of the hardware, jumper changes etc worked great and it displays my correct CPU when rebooting.
Of course my WinXP Pro won’t boot as I have new hardware.
So… I boot from the CD and when it gets to
“Setup is inspecting your computers hardware configuration…”
the system just stays there forever… nothing happens at all.

If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

also I would have a look at the cd and the cd-rom, try cleaning them both, cuz that could cause the setup to hang!

I’ve found that XP has done the same thing when it couldn’t recognize an additional IDE RAID controller. Try disabling that Promise SATA150 controller and see if that gets you anywhere.

The other thing that could be a problem is not enough juice. How big is the power supply? If it’s a decent brand and at least 350W, you should be okay.

I’ve seen the same setup hang in cases of:

a) Bad install medium
b) Bad CD-ROM drive
c) Bad RAM
d) Weak PSU
e) Oddly enough, bad USB Header

You can test the drive, disc, and USB header simply by trial and error. Try a different drive, disc, and unplug any auxiliary USB headers before attempting installation. As a matter of fact, I’d remove any devices that aren’t necessary for the installation process, and add them one at a time later. Regarding the RAM, you can get Memtest x86. It’s a bootable ISO image based on a Linux kernel. You download it for free, burn it to CD, and when you boot to it, it’ll automatically do a thorough test of your system RAM and processor cache.

Tried almost everything…

First of all I’d like to thank everyone for their comments!

I did the Memtest and the RAM is great. Switched CD’s and HD as well as pulled out the extra USB2 ports, yet I still can’t get past the system hanging when checking for hardware…

So… I checked the PS and although it is ATX2.03 recommended in the MB manual, I did notice that its combined load is only 280W

I don’t have a 350W, so I guess my next move is to purchase a new PS. I hope that’s the problem, else I’ll be upset about droping another $80CDN on more hardware to get this going and it have it solve nothing.

Look on the bright side – better to replace the PSU now than later when parts start to fry! :stuck_out_tongue: I like Enermax, Antec or Seasonic PSUs.

I vote for the psu too.
But before you spend any money, have you tried loading the Bios default options ?

I agree, while I still think a new PSU is in order anyway, try it and see.

Yes I did load the default BIOS options a couple of times with the variations of HD I tried and that didn’t help either.

Off to order a new PS.

It’s WORKING — Arghhh

Well…
I took my whole system down to NCIX.COM where I bought the motherboard, processor and ram.
As soon as they plugged it in to test it installed right away.
Nothing was changed at all!!!

So… I bought another PS anyways, but when I got home I hooked everything up and still couldn’t get past the “detecting hardware” issue.

Hummm… maybe the power at my home is crappy so I plugged my computer into a better UPS…
On my second reboot… wella I was installing XP.
I didn’t even have to install the PS after all.
I will keep it on hand anyways.

On the other hand, if the new power supply you’ve picked up has a better max load than 280watts, it’d be wise to replace your current one preventatively.
