Looking for some experienced advice

Hi all,

As you can guess this is my first time on here, hopefully some of you out there can help me.

I’m looking at putting together my own PC since everything in the shops is over-priced and has numerous things I dont think I need.

What I’m looking for is a decent package which will predominantly be used for watching and recording DVDs, storing music and also running some music recording applications on it.

I’m looking to use my PC as more or less my stereo so I’ll be probably getting a better than average sound card and some good speakers compatible for surround sound when watching DVDs.

I’m pretty sure I can choose the sound card, speakers, monitor, keyboard etc myself but in terms of the processor, RAM, hard drive (about 160Gb) motherboard and power supply (have I missed anything?) I dont really have a clue what’s best and therefore what to get?

I’d really appreciate any suggestions since I dont want to waste my money. I’m looking to spend about £500-600 in total.

Well, for music and not much else, an athlon 64, about 3000+ would be more than enough. For RAM, 512Mb of Kingston or Corsair Value RAM, is plenty.

You can get a 200gig hard disk for a little under 100 quid.

Motherboard, I wouldn’t like to say, I’m a pentium user, so dunno bout the sockets.

Power supply - Antec or Sparkle, no more than 450W is perfect. Good and reliable.

Graphics Card, really only a 5200 or 9200 if it’s for no games. Otherwise a 9600XT would permit some “modern” games if it was needed.

That’s about 400 quid, I’d say at a rough estimate.
