Does anyone know where I can get information on the relationship between desktop/laptop powering up/down cycles and its effect on the reliability of the system.
Is it better to leave your PC switched on all the time… or turn it off when your not using it say at night? In otherwords would leaving it on all the time prolong the life of the machine?

although the power managment fetures are quite good, a pc enen uses power when you think you’ve turned it off, its just down to personal choice, enviromentally your better off turning a pc off and turning the power off plus if a fan or something stops working while your asleep it could potentially damage something,
personally i shutdown my pc but dont switch the power off

Anything that’s plugged in to the wall (assuming the electric circuit it’s on isn’t shut off) will draw some current. It’s not much, but it’s there. Simply turning something off doesn’t stop the flow of electricity into it. You can still electrocute yourself if you drop a hair dryer into the bath even if it’s not turned on if it’s still plugged into the wall.
