I have a strange problem and I’d like to see if anyone can offer an explanation.
Problem: When trying to play any video file, no matter the software, the CPU usage jumps to 100%, everything locks down and I need to restart. The strange thing is that this problem does not occur when I swap out the hard drive. Everytime I use the WD HDD and play a video file, the computer locks up; everytime I use the Maxtor HDD, the computer locks up. The video drivers are the exact same. I’ve tried reformatting the old HDD and the most recent windows updates and virus software (PC-cillin) are there. What is wrong with my normal HDD (a WD hard drive)? If it is corrupt, why would all other files behave normally and the only problems be exhibited on video files? Any attempts would be very welcome!
Things I’ve tried: reformatting the HDD, installing latest virus and windows updates, using different video players, reinstalling video drivers.
My system:
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2400+
Memory: 768 MB
Problem HDD: 80 GB Western Digital
Alternate HDD (the one that plays video): 60 GB Maxtor
Video Card: NVidia GeForce 6200
I was reinstalling drivers and noticed something else. I don’t have the video problem when I uninstall the video drivers… i.e when no drivers are installed I can play video just fine. Seems like the drivers I have are corrupt in some way. I’m getting them from nvidia.com and selecting the drivers for the geforce 6 series. Not sure where the problem lies.
