personally i don’t think this is possible because it is impossible to connect an actual NIC to a virtual NIC, however, i think it is possible to have multiple VMs have access to the net through 1 VM acting as a firewall router for the other VMs and not the host
will it work ?
BTW: i’m wanting to test the config to see if it can be done with vbox & it’s something to do
Edit: i have 2 NICs in an IPcop VM
Edit: if it is possible, any suggestions / help would be appreciated
I’d have to think pretty hard on whether or not it’s possible, though I can say it’s unlikely based on a surface glance. Worse though, it would make things so overly complicated that I’m afraid it wouldn’t be an effective lab even if it did work. You’d be better off trying it with real hardware.
As far as labbing IPCop, it’s probably a lot simpler than your preconception of it if you want to lab it at all. You can try the installation on a virtual machine if it will make you feel more comfortable, but that process is so simple I’m not sure you’d get anything from the experience…
Doesn’t sound like my idea of fun, personally. If you have some old hardware you’re not using, why not throw it on that? Then at least you can do some “live” networking labs rather than fight with inter-VM communication.
