4000 vs 4200 X2

I can't help but notice how cheap the athlon 64's have gotten and I'm wondering if I should save my money for a cheap/mid level dual cores(say maybe a 4200 or 4400), or buy the AMD athlon 4000 for like $80.

Is single core even an option anymore? What with vista and dual threaded games.
 
Dual Core would be for the best :).

Get the 4200+ X2 and if possible overclock it abit.
 
Also I was looking at the 4600. How much of a preformance jump do you think I would see between the 4200 and the 4600?
 
The only difference from what I can see is a 200Mhz increase in the clock speeds on the 4600+, not worth it if you ask me, get the 4200+.
 
well i've noticed a difference, from the 4200 to the 4600. And to be completely honest, i would just save your money for the next iteration of chips from AMD.
 
The single core 4000 is an amazing deal but I will admit that it's probably best to save up a bit of cash and go dual core. It's a very gradual process but we are just beginning to see some dual core support here and you'll need all the help you can get with Vista anyway. For almost any game out now though the single core 4000 is actually a little better with it's higher clocks I believe.
 
Pretty much the 4x4 quad core chips. They'll be becomming pretty popular in a bit. Early adopters are pretty impressed but I don't think they'll dethrone the Core 2 duo's and quads in the gaming department anyway.
 
Well after i looked around, i can't even find anything higher that a 2.4 4600+ on the 939 socket. So that said, so might as well get that, as my previous statement is pretty much irrelevant, i didn't realize your board was socket 939 and AMD isn't going to be releasing anything with their new cores for socket 939. So, yeah, i say go for it.
 
on a side note Exfoliate your my hero. Yeah, that sounds right, but all i could find was the X2 4600+ and only a couple of them, didn't find anything higher, but if you looked hard enough i'm sure you'd be able to find one
 
Thanks guys. BTW I have a future cpu port that should allow me to buy an upgrade card to be able to use AM2 socket cpu's, although i'm not sure if it is worth it yet.
