98 to 2000

not really, before windows boots up, just boot the cd, follow the instructions, thats all there is to it really, but you will have to format your hard drive with windows 98 on it so i suggest backing all your data up, if you dont mind me asking tho, why windows 2000, why not XP?

Depends on if you want to do it the right way or not. You do have the option to upgrade Windows 2000 right over 98, however, since the code bases are vastly different, this can cause some problems. It's best to back up anything important, pop in the Windows 2000 CD and go through the setup making sure to format the hard drive (preferrably with NTFS for maximum benefits).
Windows 2000 boots off the CD without the need for a floppy (unless your CD-ROM is so old that it doesn't support booting of CD's----like 1x or 2x drives). The installation is pretty straight forward, and if you read the screen, it should go just fine.

I would stick in XP over windows 2000,But thats only if you have a xp setup disk. Also since you are upgrading from 98 to 2000 you will need a little bit more
Hard disk and some more ram...Windows 2000 runs good on some smaller computers,I install it all the time on my older pcs..

XP costs too much, uses loads more diskspace and twice the RAM over 2000. If you've got 98 on your computer now XP might be a bit of a costly upgrade. 2000 isnt as pretty though. For normal use theres little difference though really.
One difference which you might need is that 2000 hasnt got msconfig but I downloaded the one for XP from somewhere and used that. You can run it off the desktop, programs files, system32... anywhere.
Theres no slideshow in 2000 nor drag n drop cd burning.

You will need at lest 256MB of ram to run it and possibly more if you like having lots of apps open. You will also need a CPU faster than 500MHz to do anything fast.
Games will run slower, you will need to find Windows 2000 drivers for all your hardware, DOS games will probably not work at all.

well i dont know about needing 256mb of ram to run Windows 2000, i got by on a computer is 128mb of ram and a 1.2ghz celeron for about a whole year!

XP is pretty much Windows 2000 with a prettier look, and while the compatibility is refined, you can take a peek over at the compatibility database at NT Compatible to see if people have gotten it to work.

2000 needs twice that of 98, and xp needs twice that of 2000. I know xp defaults its explorer features to a less graphical setting when you have less than 128mb ram (or was it 64mb) Either way because it is so similar to 2000 this says to me that the extra requirements are the the Luna interface.
