A Jack of all Trades Monitor?

Hey everyone, as you can tell from looking at my "my computer" tab I'm definitely in the market for a new monitor. I want a CRT because I'm on a budget and will need to use different resolutions depending on the game I'm playing, especially as my system ages. But I want a pretty big screen with great image quality as well.
What do you all think of this one: SAMSUNG SyncMaster 997DF-T/T 19" DynaFlat CRT Monitor, I think it looks like an awesome deal anyway. I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything cheesy about it, or a better monitor in the same price range.

It's a good monitor, and a very good make i doubt you will have any problems - or go wrong :)

As for your system "aging" interms of new technology being released then yes like any other system thats built it will "age".. but it will last you a good while :)
 
Thanks, that's good to hear. I was worried that, being only $185 there was something wrong that I wasn't seeing.
 
The Nec FE991SB is what I have.

It is more expensive but this monitor will last you for 20 years, as do all the Nec monitors.

The text is very crisp at 1520x1140 and starts to be blurry at 1600x1200, but for games there's no problem at all.

The colors are bright, it has very good refresh rates (75hz @ 1520x1140) and is an aperture grille monitor. This means that you will see those two lines at the top and bottom of the screen, on a pale background, if you look for them, but it's not an issue to me.

Its main feature is the SuperBright function, which brightens your picture. This is very good for games and movies that are too dark, you don't need it for text and it's best that you don't use it for that.

Of course, the catch is the price as it is $260. But not expensive for arguably the best 19'' monitor out there (the Mitsubishi DP930SB is the same with better refresh rates).
 
That does look pretty good harrack52, thanks! I've heard mostly good things about aperture grilles too. I still like the idea of the .20mm dot pitch on the Samsung SyncMaster but I don't think it would make a difference would it?
 
Personally, I've not been all that crazy about NEC myself, but that depends on the user. Samsung has some very reputable support and RMA program---if you happen to need it.

Just don't forget to account for the shipping charge---which Newegg has at $25.

Oh, and while it's on my mind, your sig is close to 100kB, and that's a bit large. Get it down to 50-60kB range. Photoshop has a "Save For Web" feature you might want to play with if that's what you've been using.

Well the best way to know would be to look at them both, side by side.

All I know is I wouldn't change mine for anything else.

The Samsung probably looks very good, but there's no doubt in my mind that the NEC will last significantly longer.

I have an old Nec Multisync 2A. It's a 14'' monitor and it's 20-25 years old and it still works !
 
I would say that monitor looks very good. $185 seems a bit much for me, but then again I am using an emachines 17" monitor :D, a couple maybe a few or 4 years old I can't remember. Anyway, have fun with that

Yeah, sorry about that, seems like a waste to use a fairly lousy sig and take up about 100kb doesn't it? I'll size it down like you suggested.
 
Excellent, thanks Fred. I think, based on price and what most of you think, I'll order the Samsung when I get the money. The NEC looks very good as well but I don't think I can afford to pay and extra $75 plus the $25 for shipping as Big B said.
