Android n00b - Samsung updates for phones

Hello!

I recently got the very fine Samsung Galaxy S II. What I know from wikipedia is that this seems to be the US version (shipped with 2.3.4) although it has many European languages in it. Anyway, I also learned that the latest version is 2.3.6 that should be available for the S II. But neither through Kies nor through the Software Update (both in the std user UI and via the secred code) can the phone find any updates. Why the frack?

Yes, understood the same from my googling, but how is that - I mean how can some people have like 2.3.5 or 2.3.6, but I can't (w/o hacking). Is it really some kind of sub-model variation limitation?a
