Antivirus software opinions ??

A friend of mine just formatted his PC and installed everything from the begining. He noticed that without Norton Antivirus 2005 his system is running much faster.This is not the first time to hear that NAV slows down a PC.
So now he does not want to install it and looking for another type of antivirus software.

He is also using MS Antispyware BETA but I think this is not enough to keep out those dangerous trojans, worms etc...

The system is a P4 2.8Ghz with 512MB Ram and XP Pro with SP2.

What do you suggest ?

No antivirus software ? MS antispyware and the XP firewall will do the job?
Or any other type of antivirus software ?
 
windows firewall is good for outgoing properties but it has no control over incoming so u obviously need another fw, id recommend kerio personal firewall, top rated firewall, and user friendly. i think tho that its 24 euro, for antipiracy go with sunbelt (i think thats wat its called) also top rated but you have to dish out another twenty. and last for antivirus (don't worry its free) get Avg 7.0 from Grisoft, ending at about 45$ ur computers a fortress with protection both inside and out. good luck
 
I'd ditch MS antispyware, buy a router with a hardware firewall if one isn't already present, and get either AVG or I would highly recommend Trend Micro's antivirus solutions.

Ditto on the hardware firewall, especially if you have a broadband connection. Also, you may find our Networking & Security FAQ useful.

pccillin is not a bad antivirus. i have used it on a few customers systems and i have not had any complaints about viruses etc.
 
BitDefender, plain and simple. It combines all you'll need, firewall, antivirus software, email spam filter. Even gives you a small status bar that lets you know how much traffic is going through your computer wether it's from your files or the net, very handy indeed.
