Are LCD screen and Laptop power adapters the same?

My mate's power adapter for their LCD screen has gone faulty, It's says on it that the output is 12V 3.5A and it looks similar to a laptop power adapter.
I have found somewhere that sells LCD screen power adapters but they seem rather expensive. Could I use a power adapter from a laptop that has the same output or perhaps one of the universal mains adapters like this one

If it's got the same voltage and current ratings, the same size adapter, has the same connection type (have to make sure it's the same as the screen's input, more info here look on the adapter for one of those symbols and make sure the one you buy is the same) then it should be fine :good:

According to that link the adapter needs to have a DC output and a positive tip. I'm sure I can pick up an adapter like that cheaply and If I can't get one with the right plug I can always cut it off and solder a new one on as my soldering skills are pretty good :2cool4u:
 
Yeah, soldering isn't hard. The whole tip configuration is something that a lot of people overlook and it's crucially important for the device to work.

Just in case there was any doubts I can confirm that a laptop power adapter will work as an LCD screen adapter cos I've just tried it.:)

Not neccessarily, it may work in your case but there may be variations in power outputs from other adapters and variations in power requirements for other LCD's so it may not always work.

It depends on the power transformer and the LCD screens power requirements.
