ATI radeon 9500 Pro

The picture appears to be of some Radeon 9x00 card that doesn't have some RAM chips soldered in. If the seller's rating is good, fine, but otherwise, I'd pass.

I just received the card. It is an Ati radeon 9500 pro. The seller has posted the wrong picture for his item.

Hi,
It is me again, the 9500 pro card guy. Actually i have been having some problems with the 9500 pro card. There seems to be no display, sometimes, when I turn on the PC. There is just a blank screen. All the lights on the CPU are turned on, but no display. However, if i turn the PC off for, like a day, then everything turns back to normal. Unfortunately the problem is getting severe day by day and i am fed up of turning the power on/off again and again.
Just yesterday i replaced it with my old RIVA TNT2 and it is working fine. I have check a number of other forums regarding this problem. It seems to be that there are other people out there too who have similar problems. Quite surprisingly the problem is only consistant with ATi cards, there is no Nvidia card have this issue.
Now here are some of the things that were recommended on other forums:
1) Update Chipset Driver
Just installed the VIA 4 in 1 driver
2) UPdate BIOS
Cannot find any BIOS update. I anyone can please tell me.
VIA Apollo 133 (VT82C5968)
Current BIOS: AwardBIOS Ver. 1.16
3) Update Video card drivers
Haven't done that yet. Currently downloading the new drivers
4) In the BIOS setup the primary Display is set on PCI. Shouldn't it be on AGP.

My guess would be either the PSU or the motherboard being your issue. Because you're able to use your (low-voltage) TNT2 without a problem, I'm guessing that your [low-end] HP PSU is to blame. However, your old Apollo-based board could also be part of the problem. My advice is to try the card in another system, one with 4/8x AGP and at least a 400watt PSU. If it works there, it's gotta be your system, not the card.

Well, The card was working fine before and then slowly the situation detoriated. As far as the PSU is concerned it upgraded it to a 300 Watt (Arrow) power supply.
I will try the card in my friends system too. Could it be that the card is overheating?
 
I haven't seen any pictures of your chassis, so I don't know how good the ventilation is. In my experience as an HP tech, it seems HP doesn't care much for adding adequate ventilation to their systems -- this is especially true of home-class systems. But the general rule of thumb is that the outside of the chassis is warm to the touch, your system is probably scorching on the inside. If your ambient system temperature is very high, your card could very well be overheating. But ATI recommends at least a 400watt PSU for its 9500/9700 line of cards, since they utilize the extra 12v power header. The fact that your cards stability has degraded over time also points to the PSU.

You are right....... it was even difficult to plugin the card as well, so I have left my chasis open and let the air go through. I did this especially for the processor. I changed my Slot1 500mhz to 1GHz processor but i wasn't able to fit in the 1GHz processor with its fan, so i placed the old (single) small fan of my 500mhz in place two big Fan that came with the 1Ghz processor. Well i cannot do anything more than place an external fan near the chasis and hope it does something.
As for PSU, as far as i remember the PSU recommended by ATi for its radeon 9500 was a 300W one, because i had to buy it with the radeon, my previous one was only 160W.
Do you thing changing the PSU will do it......
 
YES! a GOOD psu would be good. sparkle, or antec. VERY GOOD<<< i would get atleast a 350watt of one of those brands. more would be better.

It has been about 24 hours since I pulled out the radeon. So i just placed it back right now and BEHOLD it is working like a charm again,.........BUT I DON'T KNOW FOR HOW LONG........
I thought that a 300PSU was enough but i guess i was wrong.........If this happens once more i would go for the new PSU......

temperature

The card has been in there for about couple of hours everything is fine except i think it is heating up. I touched it and it was HOT but then again (forgive for my ignorance) it is taking about 300W so shouldn't it be hot. Is there any way anybody could give me any idea about how hot the card should get under normal circumstances.
 
under a normal load it should be able for you to keep your finger on the card for a few seconds without pain. its not taking 300 watts, thats just how many area available. no worry for ignorance. i can never remember what watts do but i know that watts dont mean a whole lot. amperage is the actual amount of electricity produced. maybe you just have poor ventilation in your case.
 
If you touch the RAM chips and they're hot and you're not playing an intensive game, I'd say you've got some overheating issues. If it's coming close to burning your finger and it's not under load, that's how I define 'hot'. Besides being a royal pain in the arse to work on, I agree that the ventilation on the HP cases leaves much to be desired, and I would seriously advise picking up something else if only for ease of upgrading the system. Although I usually pimp on-line retailers, the shipping on cases and monitors tends to be rather high and just easier to check out a local PC shop for them.
 
Since B doesn't want to pimp online retailers for chassis, I will: [http://newegg.com] :D This Maxtop chassis has excellent ventilation and is very well made. I've already built 6 systems for people using the same chassis, and never had a problem with them.

P.S. - If you don't believe my recommendation alone, check out some of the reviews on this chassis...

Well i checked the RAM and the Radeon, both according to the description of overheating are fine. So i will go for the PSU. Are there any PSU compatibility issues? and would you guys recommend one?

The only modern PSU compatibility issues I'm aware of is Dell systems, which have a tweaked molex connector so that you are forced into buying a Dell PSU. You should be able to buy any ATX PSU, and it'll work fine. For high-end PSUs, I like Enermax, Antec and Flower ($50-$150). For budget PSUs, I like Thermaltake. ($35-$50).

Personally, I'd just go for the best one you could get on your budget, since there usually isn't much price difference. But a 400watt will do nicely. If you're strapped, a 350 may work alright for you, but the power rails on the 400 are more stable.
