BENQ CDRW 52X24X52 doesnt read discs??

I have a BENQ CDRW 52X24X52 which is about 1.5 years old. Today I inserted a blank cd and the drive says "Please insert disc" I tried a data cd but the drive doesnt want to read either! The motor cannot be heard spinning. I think that the drive is dead. Any opinions?

Should I try to fix it or go out and buy a new one?

So today's drive last only for 1.5 years?? I was considering buying an MSI drive. Any other suggestions? I dont want Benq products on my desk again.
 
Big B is probably right; the laser's probably toast, or the platen warped or.... :sick: Anyway, I have noticed that with OEM-built PCs, they have a tendancy to use the "Cable Select" jumper setting on all IDE devices in the system. Things work fine at first, but later seem to stop working for no clear reason. I'm not sure why this is, but I've seen it 50+ times now (no exaggeration). Just to be 100% sure it isn't this, make sure the jumper for your CD drive(s) are set to their proper (master/slave) positions. Again, I have no idea why this would affect anything, but it does. Go figure. :p

The drive was connected as MASTER on the Secondary Channel.

What do you mean by Memorex cd anything?? Are MSI drives Memorex or not?
Correct me if im wrong.
 
Did changing the jumpers help matters at all? Remember, the Master drive belongs at the end of the chain, the Slave goes in the middle. :) (And no, MSI and Memorex are completely different brands)
 
Yeah Memorex is a brand that makes cds and drives. I personnally had a bad experience with Memorex cd-rws so I'll never ever go with this brand even if my life depended on it. I don't care what the price is, I'm just not getting anything that has Memorex written on it.
 
Now, Memorex CD-R's and RW's are alright, but that's about it. I can't remember any Memorex CD playing product that's lasted all that long.
 
My problem with memorex CD-R media is not the quality of the ink, rather the quality of the silk-screening... :sick:
