Best way to do this ?

Ok im expecting my ATI x800 GTO in the post soon and i am currently using my Geforce x5200 with the latest Nvidia drivers installed. What is the best way to install my new graphics card when it comes?


p/s... Im having problems with my system recovery disk at the moment so try to keep the suggestions away from that area :) thanks
 
It's pretty simple to do:
Un-install the FX in device manager,
then un-install the nVidia drivers with the nVidia un-installer,
shut down the PC,
take out the FX and pop in the GTO,
power on the system and log in to windows,
after windows has done all the fancy mumbo jumbo install the ATi drivers and then restart!

Other HF members may have a different way to do this!
 
When you say "then un-install the nVidia drivers with the nVidia un-installer", do you mean remove it using add/remove programs? :o

yep, and wats the interface of ur GTO Agp or PCIe?
 
Hmm, i'm confused!
What interface are you using right now, AGP, PCI or PCIe?
Whatever you do, don't confuse PCI with PCIe
PCIe is the newest Video Card interface whereas PCI is the worst interface you can use for Video Cards!

GTO's don't come in PCI, you must mean PCIe?
 
Ok, i opened up my comp and found out that i have 3 slots (FX5200 is fitted in one of these) and a seperate orange coloured slot which is diffrently positioned from the other 3 slots... will my GTO fit in there?
 
That slot is probably AGP, what is your Motherboard model, if the GTO is AGP then it will go in there, if it's PCI-e then you'll need a new motherboard.
 
That's your CPU, what about your Motherboard, download PC Wizard 2005 and then click on the icon on the left hand side that looks like a computer tower with a Green Arrow pointing to it, this will tell you your 'Mainboard' Information (the icon is the middle on the first row)
Tell us if it tells you that your Motherboard has an 'AGP Bus'
Also where did you get your graphics card from, is it PCI-e or AGP.
 
I have attached an image of what to look for in PC Wizard, if it doesnt have AGP but has PCI-e then you'll need a PCI-e Graphics Card, if it does say AGP then you'll need an AGP Graphics Card.

Okay then that different coloured slot that is in a slightly different position is AGP, now what card did you order, AGP or PCI-e? Have you go the link to where you bought it from?
 
Then it won't fit, you'll either need a new motherboard with PCI-e slots or you'll have to get the AGP card.
 
See if you can exchange the card for an AGP version first...unless you're planning to jump to a motherboard with PCIe...
