Black screen when exiting games

When exit a game and try to return to the desktop, my screen goes black almost every time, resulting in me having to restart my computer.

The mouse pointer is still there and I can move that around and the keyboard still responds but the screen is totally black.

The PC is less than a week old, graphics card = GeForce 7300GS.

It started when I updated the latest drivers so I rolled them back and it stopped for a bit but it's doing it again now.

Any help would be appreciated x

Can you bring up Task manager when this happens?
If so, check if the game is still running and try killing it's process.

No, if I try to the mouse shows the little eggtimer thing to show that it loads it but I can't see it.

Also, sometimes on start-up, the screen freezes at the welcome screen and I can't click to enter my profile or shut down the computer so I have to manually reboot it. This isn't a MAJOR problem but it is a slight pain the the backside that I could be doing without. Any ideas at all?
