Broadband keeps cutting off (again)

Well, after my last thread about BB cutting off, I thought I had everything sorted when a computer guy called and fixed my pc with a Speedtouch 330 modem and it worked a treat. Previously had a TalkTalk SmartAX.

A week or two after this TalkTalk updated the cables in our area and it seems we are back to square one because it keeps cutting off again and I have to 're-dial' twenty, thirty or more times to get reconnected. Message just keeps coming up 'no dial tone' which is extremely frustrating.:doh:

I have just heard via friend, who has the same problem, that the technical team at TalkTalk told her it's because the Speedtouch modem is not capable of working with the upgraded cable! I have also learned that it's only Speedtouch where you need to 'dial-up' to get on Broadband.

I don't know too much about modems so has anybody got suggestions as to which I should now use.

Talk Talk has bitten off more than it can chew Rebekka, they are offering cheap rates but no one can get on, this is the same as FreeServe years ago.
There is nothing wrong with the Modem, I have the same model. It's Talk Talk that's falling down at their end.
Get on the horn and give them a bollocking.
It doesn't "Dial Up" either although the pop up box may look like it is.

Thanks for that info - so I needn't look for a different modem because it won't necessarily improve things?

I will have a go at TalkTalk tomorrow but sometimes the people who answer the phone don't seem
to, or don't want to, understand what I am trying to tell them.

I thought when I at last got onto Broadband everything would be easy - wrong!:confused:

i had a ST330 when i used XP their alright until you get to about 8mb/s, personally i now use an ethernet router[ot]best thing i ever did[/ot]

You ask if I am on cable - forgive my ignorance - but if you mean am I on landline or am I wireless then I am using TalkTalk landline.

Is an ethernet router a 'box' near the incoming telephone cable with an aerial on the computer?

yes, a wireless router has somtimes has an aerial on the router[ot]to create a WAP (Wireless Access Point) that allows access to the wireless network for wireless devices[/ot]if you get a router with a built in wireless adapter and a built in modem[ot]which most routers are nowadays[/ot]a ST330 connects to the USB port whereas a router usually connect to a NIC (Network Interface Card)[ot]most new motherboards have a NIC built in[/ot]

Once again thanks for information. Strangely enough I have been on line over two
hours today and haven't lost Broadband once! I am waiting to see if the improvement is maintained
- will make a change later on if it's necessary!
