Built-in Sound not Working after reinstall

Because of a goof-up on my part, I had to re-install XP SP2 :O now the sound won't work. (and other things)

I have downloaded the drivers from Tyan, file: 5.12.01.3513Tyan which is Sound Max,(4th pix). I took a look at the specs and I saw that it was a (2nd pix) AC '97 compliant audio.

Anyway at first I installed the Sound Max program/drivers and the sound didn't work. Made sure all volumes were up high and on - nothing muted- checked in system/hardware/device to make sure that there were no yellow ?. So then I switched drivers to add the AC '97 hoping that might work. Nothing :doh: :doh:

Any ideas are most welcomed- short of buying a sound card :chk: :chk:

This isn't meant as an insult or anything, I'm just not familiar with your level of technical knowledge: You have checked device manager to see if you're missing any drivers, right? If not, you can go to start -> right click My computer -> Manage then to device manager. In there, you can see if any drivers are having problems/not installed. Secondly, you can download and run unknown devices. When run, this program identifies the specifics of any hardware which is missing drivers.

Those are my first thoughts. Anytime I've installed a sound card, it just works for me unless the card is dead. Let us know if this helps or if you're still having some issues.

Thank you for looking and answering. Yes I have, In the last post there is a pix of the device mgr #3, no missing drivers/devices, sorry not labeled.

Thanks for the link to unk devices, I'll uninstall the driver and run that.
 
Besides the built-in sound, the two SCSI's.

Initially, when I first built this PC everything worked, the sound and the 4 SCSI's: 2x 18gb 15k for boot up and the 2x 78gb 10k for video editing.

I used Everest to find out the various drivers mfg and installed from their site.
 
Well, I checked out the driver that you listed, looked at the manual, and browsed around...It seems like everything was done correct, so this may just be a completely stupid simple problem, or an all too complex problem for an onboard audio card. I know ive been in the same situation and have found that the audio wasn't plugged into the middle green audio line out. Other times i've seen that all of the windows based sound settings are set to full volume, but occasionally there tends to be another setting hiding in somewhere in the software that came packaged with the driver. Either way, I know that you don't want to hear it but I'd actually suggest buying a new card...especially if your doing video editing type things. An accelerated audio card will help to take some of the load off of your processors, and they are fairly cheap if you look around e.g. newegg, ebay, pricewatch...You don't have to buy a brand new one, audio technology today isn't much different from what it was 3 years ago. Sorry bud, but thats the best I can come up with. You could try checking settings/updating the bios(which i may add there is an onboard audio setting in your bios), and Completely removing/reinstalling the drivers too. Anything is worth a shot...right?

I've done all that I can think of - same line as your's and I have orderd a sound card :O :O off of eBay.
The green plug from the speaker is in the green connector, the bios is on "default" for the sound but that's all that can be done. The drivers have been reinstalled three times now - and that's enough.

It's just one of those "built ins" that I really hate to have - same as video, I won't buy a MB w/built-in video.
