burning smell from vid card

Just put my first comp together last week and everything was going fine until my new video card arrived today. At first everything seemed fine but when i started running it for a while i could smell something burning. I quickly turned my comp off. I could smell the burning comping from both the vid card and my power supply, which was running fairly hot. I waited a while and set the comp up and again and it ran fine but I didnt want to leave it running. So im wandering what I need to do to make sure I can get it up and running without the smell of course.

3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 (800MHz FSB)
2x DDR2 1 GB 533Mhz
16x dvd rom
52x cd rom (burner)
Serial ATA HD (7200 rpm)
350W power supply
ATI Radeon X700 pro (PCIE)
 
Your current power supply may not be designed to handle the newer Pentium 4 LGA775 Prescott CPUs and the stress may be causing it to heat up, especially if it's one that was bundled with the case (these tend to be cheap ones...but not always).
 
Yeah its just the supply that came with the case. Also I just tried to use my comp and it didnt even power up. Is this gonna do anything to my comp or can I just buy a better power supply and plug it in with everything still working?
 
Nice video card. Yeah power supply that come with cases as a bundle are cheep because if you think about it the company making the case wants to spend as little as possible and still maintain a quality. If you want a good power supply i suggest you get a

Is about the same price, and being Antec it has a 3 year warranty. And it is a very respected brand.

an Ultra 600watt Is excellent, 30 bucks cheaper, has only a 1 year warranty, an has LED lights, and an acrylic window.

The choice is yours. Personally, I would shoot for an Antec, because I am biased as hell. I also haven't heard of any complaint against them. I have a 3500watt smartpower, running all my sh-, and currently 9, yes NINE fans, also OC'ed my CPU. And still powah left
 
Before we go any further, what motherboard do you have? The newer LGA775 boards have special power supply requirements that need to be addressed.
 
Ive got the Intel Board D915gev. Im running down to a store and Ill be picking up that biggest damn power unit I can get. :)
 
You dont want to much power remeber. No more the 500w i have seen bigger onces and they have to much power and have heating issues with them

Actually, these new LGA775 boards have a 24-pin ATX power connector instead of the older 20-pin ATX. Basically, you want to look at an ATX EPS power supply, which were originally used for multi-processor Xeon setups. They're not exactly cheap, but considering they're server-grade, it's going to be hard to find a crappy unit. The problem is that your store may not stock them.

Now, you might be able to get a standard ATX power supply and get by fine, but I have been reading about people having trouble even then.
 
Well I went down and picked up a 480W Antec Cool Blue, because it was the only decent power supply unit they had :( , but its only get 20 pins so Im gonna hold off using the comp until I pick up an adapter. Hopefully that should finish off the problem. Have you heard anyone having any problems with the adapter in place?
 
Yes. Mostly in regards to stability during intensive operations. The other would be issues booting up the machine to begin with...even with a 20->24-pin adapters in place.
