Can't install XP pro or Win2000?????????

I'm a noob so hello everyone!
I hope someone can help me out here as I'm at my wits end with this problem! :(
I can't install a windows os (haven't tried Linux). I've formatted the HD, an IDE 40gb drive that has been working fine before. I used partition magic and set the bulk partition to active/primary. I then put the CD in and restart. I get the "press any key to boot CD" prompt, press a key and the drivers get loaded. then I get the blue screen the says "press R or press enter". At this point the keyboard is totally non-responsive, I can do NOTHING! How bloody irritating is that!
I thought at first that it was the HDD because I had installed Linux over XP (I made a bit of a mess of it) and the HD was in about 4 different pieces and file systems when I came to reformat it. I've now formatted it so that it looks exactly the same as this PC that I'm using now (using Partition Magic) but it's still the same!
Anyone had a similar experience? I'd be really grateful for any pointers.
 
Have you tried deleting the partition tables and letting NT5.x create at least its own partition (even if you leave the rest blank for partitioning later)? Windows can be pretty touchy about that kind of thing.
 
Just tried deleting the partition and starting from scratch. I'm staring at the blue screen now hitting return but still no response:x: This is doing my head in!
 
The disk has no information on it. No os so I can't use disk management. I've formatted the drive 4 times now as I believed that the cause of the keyboard not working on install was that the drive was mis-formatted initially. I don't think that it's the drive now because I've tried to format it every way that partition magic will allow and nothing makes any difference. I also thought that it may be my keyboard, but that works in every other program and it works fine on other pc's. I'm starting to think that I did something to the drive when i installed Linux????
Anyone heard of Linux/Windows os's causing any troubles like this?

Bit embarrassing :O twas the keyboard itself that was letting me down after all! I got an old one from work and now it works fine, sorry to waste your time guys, but thanks for the help anyway
