Hi, I've built myself a new rig and want to know the differnece between CAS 4-4-4-12 and CAS 5-5-5-18 and which would be better to buy.

I've read the HWF CAS Latency explained but it doesnt seem to mention the 4-4-4-12 vs 5-5-5-18part

    Thanks

well 4-4-4-12 is faster than the 5-5-5-18 one but i think one is 667mhz the other is 800mhz ddr2 sticks

if i were you i would buy the 800mhz one

and also you can downclock the ram to 750mhz and decrease the cas latency to 4-5-4-14 or a value close to it if you don't get satisfied with the performance of the stick

thanks.. why would you get 800mhz, my cpu bus is 1333 and im not thinking of overclocking, does 800mhz (vs 667) work faster at the same cas?

    exactly it will be faster

i would buy 800mhz because downclocking decreases the temp levels also if you work on 667mhz with that cas latency

oh rite, forget about temperature i was told if your cpu FSB is 1333 then your ram should be half that if you're running dual-channel (2x667MHz = 1334)

having 2x800mhz (1600mhz) where FSB is 1333 wont improve performance, right?

    sorry im bit confused

well yeah it increases but without overclocking tahat 800mhz or 667mhz won't get multiplied by that way stock values will be important for setting up data interface bandwidth
