Hello, I'm new to this forum and just had a couple questions. I have a Compaq Presario 5000 with all original parts. I believe my CD-ROM is starting to fail and want to replace it with a new CDRW drive. My question is this... how do I know what is compatable? Do I have SCSI or IDE? Is it as easy as just swapping out?

My PC has a 900Mhz Athalon processor.

Any help would be greatly apprecaited. You're knowledge and experience will surely save me much headaches. I thank you all in advance.

Mike

You have an IDE system, and any IDE/ATAPI compliant CDRW will do the trick. If you're in the US, check out this Samsung CDRW/DVD-ROM from Newegg.com. It's a great drive-- fast, stable and cheap.

P.S. - If you haven't already added the optional chassis fan to your Presario, you should! They're indended to overheat as is, so it's wise to provide as much cooling as is possible. You can pick up a good ball-bearing fan from newegg as well.
