Computer crash

My PC hit the buffers last week. It was booting up fine when the following notice popped up:
"Isass.exc-system error
Security Accounts Manager initialisation failed because of the following error. A device attached to the system is not functioning. Error Status Oxc0000001.Click OK to shutdown and reboot in safe mode. Check the event log for more detailed information."
When I booted up in safe mode I was faced with the same notice. I just couldn't boot up. The only way out that I could think of was to reinstall windows, which is what I did. Has anyone any idea what the notice meant and how it arrived?

So is your computer working now?

By the sounds of it, one of your device drivers may have become corrupt, or a peice of hardware stopped functioning.

This leads me to ask you two questions:

1) Have you installed any new hardware recently?

2) Have you upgraded any hardware drivers recently?

As for 'Event Viewer', go into the control panel and select 'administrative tools'. You will see it in there.

The problem was that I was unable to access the event log because I couldn't boot up. The only way I could get past the "message", was to click "OK" and this immediately rebooted the PC. This happened even in safe mode.

Before the crash, I did install one piece of hardware - a Netgear wireless router to connect with my downstairs computer. But the router was simply connected via a USB port. Surely this wouldn't have such a drastic reaction.
My computer is working fine now - so is the router.
