hey all,

i got doom 3 and the addon, but everytime i play it, it crashes 2 the desktop, completely at random, i could play it for 5secs or 10mins, and it still crashes, every drivers updated, and ive lowered graphics 2 640x480 (this is the only game that gives me the prob, i have hl2 and area 51 aswell and no probs) and i still get the prob :( any ideas?
 
Hm I had a similar problem where the game would crash at certain points. I actually rolled back my drivers and it worked perfectly afterwards.

Also, D3 is very sensitive to overclocking. If you have OC, return the speeds to stock and try again.
 
ive tried it wiv catalyst 5.7 and 5.8 and omega drivers, still no avail, and nothing is overclocked
 
What kind of Powersupply do you have there? Just out of curiosity, chances are it's not the problem but if it's super generic maybe. HL2 would run a lot better on your rig than D3 anyway but I doesn't exactly explain the crashing. You could try to patch it too.
I pushed my card as far as it would go and D3 eats it right up so I guess it depends.
 
oo ok, dumb moment there, its a encer stock one i got with the tower, i did have a gold dual fan one, but one of the fans was pointed directly at my processor, so it was making the system crash
 
You know that does make me worry a bit. I'm not going to command you to buy a new power supply but lets just say that a lot of people on this site have had very similar game crashing on me type problems which were usually powersupply related, and most came with case psu's aren't renouned for they're stability and reliability. But wait for a few more responces any way. I'd hate to waste you're money.
 
To me it sounds like a PSU issue, as Ex said most generic ones that come with the case don't really have what high-end games demand. I'd personally go for a new PSU but as Ex said, it's a lot of money for a long shot. But that's the only solution I can think of.
 
yea maybe, well ill prob spend out on a new one soon, but ill stick wiv hl2 and cs:s for now. thanks anyways :)

Normally when we get issues like that we concentrate drivers first. We roll back to stock supplied by the CD, roll back to stock DirectX on CD and we run a few hardware specific tests mainly based around temperature. The thing with your system tho is that it seems to play other games fine, which implies that it must be something generically wrong with the patches or the drivers. Not saying that it IS, but it implies that. However, you could try getting a system temperature monitoring program and see if you can get any indication of when your system is bombing out of the game. There's plenty of good free ones online if you google them. Failing the fact that its a matter of temperature (ie. overheating so system decided to die) try like the other lads have said playing with your PSU though Id make it a last gasper if I could.

Also, what kind of memory modules do you use?

And I know this sounds really dumb and patronising and its not meant to be but is there anything at all in the D3 troubleshooting/FAQs that perhaps covers it?

Hope you get it sorted let me know how it goes and I'll try and get my head around it.

Beastmaster is correct. However, with a PSU that low-end, it's not a bad idea to replace it preemptively. I've seen some pretty nice systems go down the tubes due to a cheap PSU, it'd be a pity for another to go the same route unnecessarily. The lowest grade PSU I'll personally put in an ATX system is a Thermaltake 420watt TruePower, which costs about $35/US and is rock-solid. If I had a good budget, Enermax is what I'd go for without a doubt. But I digress; it is your system and your wallet. You might still get quite a lot of use out of your existing PSU yet...

the one i just got yesterday is pretty good, Tagan TG480-U01 Silent Black Edition PSU....its has so much, PCIe Connectors x2, 4/8pin motherboard CPU power connector, 20/24 pin motherboard connector, 4x SATA connectors, 8 Molex connectors and 2 floppy connectors...it wasnt that expensive and the ratings are....
+3.3V = 28A
+5V = 48A
+12V = 28A
-12V = 1A
-5V = 0.8A
+5VSB = 2.5A
total conbined from +3.3V, +5V and +12V = 460W)
there are many more, just have a look around, i'm just giving the ratings of what i think is an awesome PSU and is just so quiet...i cant even hear it now :D
 
hell yea, and i didnt realise this version has many future-proof connectors (PCIe, 4xSATA, 4/8pin CPU power, 20/24pin motherboard etc...there are many out there though, just have a search and see what you can find.

I just had to register to respond to this thread.

I see a number of issues with this sort of thing and having tried myself to sort a similar problem out for the kids (honest ;) ) it occurred to me that it is sooo frustrating effectively having to test by playing a game.

In the past I have tried without sucess to recreate a crash by using freebie PC loading utilities that are available on the web.

Has anyone got any suggestions that would effectively load the PC as though a game were being played, but without playing the game?

There are several ways to do this, depending on what components you're stressing. If you're testing the RAM and northbridge, Memtest86+ is what you're looking for. For the CPU (and the memory subsystem), run F@H. Finally, a good test to push your video card (along with your CPU, RAM, and motherboard) is a Q3A demo loop. It is a game, but one you don't necessarily have to interact with. You can make it run automatically (perhaps overnight?) by pushing the '~' (tilda) key to enter the console, and typing the following exactly as written, pressing ENTER after each line:

set demo2 "demo demo002; set nextdemo vstr demo1"
vstr demo1
That will run gameplay demos automatically until you intervene and shut it down (or it crashes). If you want to really push the video card, append this line before the last line above:

timedemo 1
That will take out the framerate limitations that usually makes the game run in real time, so instead it will run as fast as the system can push it (very fast). I recommend that if you run it in timedemo mode, you turn the sound off during the test (trust me on this one).
