DVD Problem

New system Asus K8V SE DL, Athlon 64 3200+, 1Gb RAM. OS XP Pro
Installed an Asus DVD/RW as master and an older Yamaha CD/RW as slave.
DVD will read music CDs and write data CDs but will not read data CDs.
The unit hunts the CD for a long while and if it does get the .exe file in the "Run" window ( which isn't alsways certain) it then says " Only part of a Read Process Memory or part of a Write Process Memory was completed".
It also fails the speed test on Nero (also from Asus) the message shows "Logical unit communication error (ultra DMA/32)(040803)".
Needless to say the slave CD/RW works fine with everything.
Anyone any ideas, as Asus haven't?
 
try it so you only have the Asus drive installed, also try using a different cable to see if it helps.
 
Thanks Sniper, but I have just tried an LG DVD/RW in place of the Asus and it worked fine, even the disc speed test in Nero. So it would not seem there is a problem with the system equipment as such.
 
Some drives may not like to share an IDE cable with another device or only work correctly as master or slave when sharing an IDE cable.
 
I've now found that out Big B. I swopped drives around and the Asus worked fine on it's own but will not work correctly neither as master nor slave on a shared cable.
 
I've not used Asus drives before, so I don't know if that's just some Asus-specific quirk or not. I'd probably take it back and exchange it for a new drive, just to be safe. I also try and run all my IDE devices on their own separate cables, but that's just me. IDE can only access one device at a time, so it helps to have everything on it's own cable.
 
Thanks Big B, the only spare 40 pin connector I have, as I do want both optical drives, is a RAID ATA one.
Could I connect an optical unit to that or is that a big No No?
