DVI to HDMI adapter - sound problems

Ok, so here goes...

I built my brother a computer with Vista Home Premium which he is hooking up to a new LCD TV. The computer is being hooked up to the TV by using a DVI to HDMI adapter attached to the video card and then running an HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV. The video is working perfectly, but the issue is with the sound:

When the computer boots up, the sound does not work. If you plug, then unplug normal speakers, the sound starts working and works fine until you reboot. If you boot the computer up with speakers already plugged in, the sound doesn't work until you unplug the speakers. Interestingly, under the sound devices (Start-Control Panel-Sound), the HDMI sound does not even appear until the plug/unplug. However, it is currently set to default.

All drivers on the computer are up to date (It is only a couple month old build and all drivers were downloaded from their respective websites). The BIOS is also up-to-date.

Several different people I work with were surprised that we got sound at all because we were using DVI to HDMI. Has anyone else ever used DVI to HDMI and got sound, or am I just that amazing? More importantly, is there anyone who has ever heard of this issue before and knows how to fix it?

I am prepared to buy a dedicated video card with built in HDMI if I need to, but I'd rather not spend the money if the problem is able to be resolved. I'd appreciate any advice or constructive input of any kind.
 
Hey, i really dont know how you got sound at all b/c dvi is only video output. if u were using direct hdmi, then you would get perfect hdmi sound. ur best bet would be to get a video card with hdmi built in, or you can buy a home theater or stereo reciever, and hook the audio into that. That way you can use the same speakers for the tv and computer, but your not going to get sound, or at least normal sound with a dvi to hdmi adapter alone.

The TV that the computer is being hooked up to has audio jacks (red, white) beside the first HDMI port, which we have tried using to get sound but to no avail.

Hmm.. must be a nvidia thing about DVI to HDMI not supporting sound or something. The DVI to HDMI adapter I linked to says it supports audio but only lists a handful of ATI cards.

The audio receiver idea is good, but I'm not really looking to spend the money if I'm capable of getting the sound working as-is. Plus, if I was going to have him spend money on a receiver, I'd have him buy a video card with HDMI built in.
 
Dvi means Digital Video Interface.

And a onboard DVI will not carry sound.
All the HDMi adapter does it make the DVI into an HDMI.

What you need is to connect the computer audio jacks to the TV or the surround sound whatever.
