Eating up monitors?

I found a computer in the dumpster at work after new owners took over and were clearing out a bunch of junk. I took it home and tested it. It worked good so I gave it to my parents to use. I put an old NEC 14" multisync on it and all was good. A few months later, the monitor died. The light would come on but no display. It was an old monitor so I figured it had died of natural causes. My Dad got a new off-brand (Seanix) CRT monitor to replace it cause they were on sale. About a month later it died. The display was bright white with slightly darker diagonal lines accross the display. It showed this whether being plugged into the computer or not. He took it back under warranty and instead of waiting up to a month for it to be repaired, he bought a cheap display model Samsung CRT monitor to use. This one lasted a whole 24 hours. It suddenly turned off and now the power flashes on and off, the picture tube sounds to be powering up but there is no display. When disconnected from the computer it does the same thing but flashes slower. Now, is this just a case of you get what you pay for in monitors, or is there something about the computer frying the monitors? Can a video card fry a monitor and yet appear to display properly on a virgin monitor? I am baffled at this point and am looking for anyone with any useful input.

While anything is certainly possible, I don't think the video card is to blame here. You might have some bad luck, but...
Got a good surge protector? If not, get one---something from APC or Belkin are good quality and will run between $20-30 at retail establishments.

I have tried the fried monitors on another computer but they act the same. They were plugged into a surge protector but probably not a "good" one. Might be a good idea to get one but I don't think that's the problem, then again what do I know.
