File server software

Hi, is there any software that can share a partition on that computer, with other computers withought needing an os, like a bottable application, like partition magic, but just for file sharing?

The closest thing I can think of would be a NAS: Network Attached Storage. However, even these run some sort of OS, albeit something like a very small Linux distro on some flash memory. As far as some specialized software, there's none that I'm aware of. A live distro could do it, but if you need to tweak anything to make it work, that wouldn't cut it if you have to turn the power off.
