Excellent software used for organizing, labeling, and editing photos and then exporting them to a beautiful HTML photo album with several stages of thumbnails and many templates to choose from. Mandriva Linux users: Album Shaper can be found in your package manager. Alternately you can run the following command as root:

Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall

Reasonably good firewall, more powerful then ZoneAlarm's free Personal Firewall. Kerio is downloadable as a free trail of the Professional (paid for) edition. However, when the time limit runs out, the program reverts to the free version.

Avast Home Edition

Probably the best free anti-virus program around. Available for Windows and Linux. Includes on-access protection against web threats, p2p shaing, instant message and email. Excellent! :)
 
DVD Rip-O-Matic (for Linux)

The only DVD ripper I could get working under SuSE Linux :confused: Thank god it's pretty good at what it does. The ripping takes place from an easy-to-use wizard. There are various options to choose from, including desired file size and media format. The ripping process takes around 3 hours to complete for a standard length film.

AcidRip is a Gtk2/Perl application for ripping and encoding DVD's. It neatly wraps MPlayer and MEncoder, which I think is pretty handy, seeing as MPlayer is by far the best bit of video playing kit around for Linux. As well as creating a simple Graphical Interface for those scared of getting down and dirty with MEncoders command line interface, It also automates the process in a number of ways:
  • Parses DVD into contents tree
  • Finds longest title
  • Calculate video bitrate for given filesize
  • Finds black bands and crops them
  • Gives suggestions for improved performance
  • Other stuff!

On my Barton 3000+, it takes roughly 20 minutes to encode a 120-minute movie to an MPEG-4 variant.
 
LMMS Linux MultiMedia Studio (Linux only)

LMMS aims to be a free alternative to popular (but commercial and closed- source) programs like FruityLoops, Cubase and Logic giving you the ability of producing music with your computer by creating cool loops, synthesizing and mixing sounds, arranging samples, having more fun with your MIDI-keyboard and much more...

LMMS combines the features of a tracker-/sequencer-program (pattern-/channel-/ sample-/song-/effect-management) and those of powerful synthesizers and samplers in a modern, user-friendly and easy to use graphical user-interface.

I've used Cubase a fair amount back in my Windows days. It's an excellent program but at £400 it's a little expensive! LMMS is similar to Cubase in many respects and is completey free of charge. It can use VST plugins and Synths designed for Windows and on the whole is pretty easy to use.

Debian users can simply type 'apt-get install lmms'. However if you want Windows VST support you need to compile it from source like I did. :)

Trying to post it fails, i have attached it as a plain text file (its VERY long, might be usefull to keep on a pendrive etc for a referrence if you ever need anything).

EDIT: If somebody can inform me of the maximum length of a post then i will quite happaily do it :P (and how long do i have to wait between posts so they arnt auto-merged? [PS by "posting Fails" i mean i clicked submit, and left it for 5 mins and it had done nothing! lol]

Terragen homepage
Creates 3d landscapes which you can turn into high quality images. I used to use it to make landscapes for the deltaforce games.
It has been used on films, games, music videos.... all sorts. I think it was even used in star trek.
Terragen 2 will be out soon. Even though its only up to 0.9 now ?
Bloody brilliant program. VERY easy to use too.

osCommerce, Open Source Online Shop E-Commerce Solutions It creates the most professional looking eshops around. Its not so much a program, more a php/html template. Hard to explain but it great and its free.
A good free program to setup a webserver. (i used it to edit oscommerce offline) is xampp

online games that rock are: knightsonline duelz and warrock

knightsonline is like runescape but all servers are free and its not in java :) :) so its fast o yea u allso get more than the 4" window runescpape gives and u dont have to feed your person like in runescape wich some1 that is at lvl 60 at on rune scape has spent on adverage 150 days geting food

duelz is just that u get a char and guns/sword and fight ppl to lvl up and get money to buy better guns this game is not like real guns

warrock beta still just came out only about 22.000 people downloaded game as of now like duelz but u get planes and vechs like tanks trucks and bikes this game has real guns and real tanks the airplanes have troble right now but this is still a beta

utorret it the best torret program i have ever tried i have 2 computers and one is new and the 2nd is a bit older 400mhz :) the 2nd computer had problem with the java apps like limeiwre but utorret is very light the whole install is only 153k and its allmost instant start it has all the options of the bigger programs but less size and almost no ram useage i have utorret dling while i play warcraft3 on the same computer (and the other at the same time) utorret is best for movies for game dls

limewire best p2p for music/musicvideos a little slow but its worth it very nice looking and lots of options so far i have uploaded 700gb in a year the network is very strong and limewire is allso open sorce its allso free (the pro version can be dled on the limewire program its self just search for limewire pro)
