Geforce fx5900xt Game lockups

Can anyone help, every time a play a game it locks up and have to reset the computer,this is while playing Combat fs,Splinter cell, Sc pandora tomorrow or any installed game. If i lower the graphics spec of each game lockups are reduced but after spending a lot of money on a wizzy card this is very deperssing. I have all the up to date drivers, win updates,direct x9c.
 
do you have good airflow in your case?
during a game, touch the heatsink of your video card, and if you feel pain it's too hot might be overheating

What type/wattage power supply do you have? Also, are you using drivers from the card manufacturer, or from Nvidia? Are your motherboard drivers current?
 
Definately sounds like overheating if lowering the detail level reduces them. Make sure you havn't enabled some overclocking settings for the card if there is any. Are you sure its your graphics card thats the problem though?

I have added 3 extra fans and a massive cpu fan, however that dosent mean the air flow is right, Thanks
 
Touch your case; is it warm to the touch, or cool? If it feels cool (especially cooler than room temp), you case probably isn't overheating. Actually, by the sound of your problems, it sounds much more like a driver/setup problem than a hardware one. Or, it could still be your PSU, or perhaps your northbridge.
 
Make sure the fans aren't all blowing air in one way. Fans that blow air out are better than fans that blow air in, in most cases. (pun) so just keep a good balance.

I had an error message interupting game play say that ther was insuffisent power to run the game and was reducing graphics spec, or something like that so i stuck a 600 watt power supply in and made sure the graphics card had a power lead of its own from the box. I only ever download drivers from the nvidia site as for motherboard i will check. Thanks
 
I had exactly the same message with my FX5900. Try using omega drivers as an alternative. [google]Omega graphics drivers[/google]

I definatly havent enabled any overclocking settings, i dont know enough about it nor do i have money to replace the card, as far as i can work out the card has to be the problem and not a software issue but i am more than willing for any help on what else it may be. Thanks

Try checking the temperature of the heatsyncs on your video card and your northbridge while the system is under a heavy load (gaming, etc). Are they uncomfortably hot? You should be able to hold an uncalloused finger on the 'sync for around 10 seconds with no pain.

I will check that tomorrow, i take it u mean the northbridge drivers could be a problem and not the chip :confused:
 
temps can screw up a system very badly. That's the most common killer. what brand of power supply did you get? You may not be getitng enough power. I would try the omega drivers addis posted. hope you get it solved
