Graphics Card not Recognising correct Direct x Version

Hi,

Can anyone tell me why my graphics card does not recognise the fact that i have DirectX 9 installed? When i open up the Graphics card settings it states under the 'system information' section that i am running DirectX 8, but i have actually got DirectX 9 installed.
I have tried reinstalling Direct X, and reinstalling my graphics driver, but it doesn't change.
I believe that this is preventing me from running some of my programs as i keep getting a message saying 'Macromedia Projector' error come up when i try to run a game that needs DirectX 9.

Any ideas??
 
Hey Caz, welcome to hardwareforums. Could you help us out by supplying a little info about your system -- the operating system revision, what video drivers you're using, and what programs are giving you the errors. Also, it would be helpful to know how you're installing DirectX 9.0b. Is it via the Windows updater, or from a distributable version? Thanks. ;)
 
Start-->Run. Type dxdiag in the box and you'll be able to see what DX version you have.

I have run DirectX DXDiag and it states i have DirectX 9. It's just the graphics Card that says 8.

I am running Windows XP Home edition. Version 2002 with Service Pack one and all windows updates are up to date.
The Graphics Driver is provided by Abit. Dated 02/04/03. Version 4.3.5.1. As far as i am aware there is not newer version on the Abit website.

The programs i am having trouble running are two programs for my daughter.
So you may not have heard of them - unless you have a 2 year old daughter who loves PC's like mine!
One is Postman Pat activity Pack. The other is Toybox Games collection.
It's mainly the Toybox one that i need to fix.
Sys Requirements of which are:
Windows 98,ME or XP. Penitum II or 400hhz processor. 128 Mb Ram. DirectX 9 compliant graphics card running at 800x600 with 24 bit colour (Can't do this as i can only choose 16 or 32 bit, but i've tried both!)
DirectX 9 Compliant 16 bit sound card (Got Soundblaster). 8 speed CD Rom (Got 32)
As this game requires DirectX 9 then it has it on the Disc. I have uninstalled the game and reinstalled it including installing directX 9.

Just as a matter of note, I have no trouble running my Call of Duty or Medal of honour.

OK, I've seen similar problems with Windows XP before. Try downloading and installing the latest build of DirectX. Next, you can get better video drivers for your video card. Try that and see if it fixes your games. If not, it could very well be shoddy programming on behalf of the game designers. Sometimes [badly written] software looks for a very specific verion of DirectX. If you install a different version than it's expecting, i.e. a newer version, it simply won't run. This despite the fact that DirectX is backwards compatible; some programmers don't think that far ahead. I've seen this fairly rarely with modern games, but it seems to happen most commonly with childrens or educational software. Perhaps it's due to a lower budget? :confused:
 
:good: Thanks very much for your help. I have downloaded the latest NVidia Graphics driver and now the card is recognising Direct X9, but i am still getting the same problems on my daughters software. :(

It sounds like you could be right, perhaps it is the program.
I will let you know if i find a fix!

It's our pleasure. ;) It may be a good idea to check out the game manufacturer's website. Perhaps they have a patch for it? If not, you might consider contacting them to make them aware of the problem. Let us know how it works out for you.
