HD DVD vs Blu ray

Just wondering does anybody own both blu ray and hd dvd player. I own a blu ray player and i love the picture etc. however I really want transformers and its coming to hd dvd first. is there a difference inpicture quality between blu ray and hd dvd and if so how noticeable is it?
 
There is no difference in quality between HD DVD and Blu ray. They both use the same video resolution and sound quality. It's more like a battle between the 2 formats, to decide the new standard in video discs.
 
Quality is very similar, i would stick with blu-Ray it will soon catch up with regards to price, and blu- Ray holds more data.

Actually the HD-DVD people just came out with a triple layer disks, which have capacities which are very close to Blu-ray discs. So, at this point its just up to personal preference, granted i don't know all the information transfer speeds for Blu-ray or HD-DVD, so that would also be a little bit of a factor. On a last note, i read that Blu-ray has something lke 73% of the North American market, over HD-DVD.
 
I would have thought one will prevail and my money is on hd dvd. Even old people now know what a dvd is and hd is a term that will become well known and probably a standard in years to come so hd dvd has the name.

I wouldnt have thought transfer speeds and disc capacity would determine the victor.... look at the vhs/betamax showdown. Betamax were smaller and better quality and vhs became the houshold choice. Apart from my dad, but he always liked to be different!

ive just realised and didnt read swnasons post correctly! 73% of the us market is blu-ray! Ive never seen a blu-ray disc advertised or in the shops! Ive only seen them for the ps3 games. If thats how it is in america then thats how it will be for the rest of the world!
 
All the big electronic companies are backing blu ray and the other are backing HD who are these companies? I read in the newspaper the other week that the major players are backing blu ray and that gives it a more advantage.
 
Blu-ray offers a faster read speed and therefore can top HD-DVD in terms of bitrate for movies which should allow them to look better but any Warner titles which is the only real way to get a decent comparision use the same encode for both formats so you will see no difference between HD-DVD & Bluray.
 
Some things are going to be Blue Ray only, and some HD DVD only, my personal choice would be HD DVD due to it's newer encoder, whereas blue ray uses MP4 which is over 10 years old... But in real time difference, I supose there won't be too much different noticable

I wouldn't expect you to, since they should both have the same encoded video.

I've never read this anywhere, but bluray discs should all use an AVC codec. MP4 for HD?!
 
However, Sony is backing Blu Ray.

Other format failures:
BetaMax
MiniDisc
UMD

Not to bash Sony, but are you guys seeing a pattern here?

It looks like a winner has emerged now, with Warner going Blu I can't see HD-DVD being able to survive much longer.

Sony threw enough money around this time to finally be get a winning format which unfortunatly is a shame since HD-DVD was just starting to make a come-back and personally despite having both formats preferred HD-DVD due to region free players and the lack of over restrictive DRM in their format.

But really though, everything but UMD's were superior to what was currently availible. Especially the mini disc, way better than a CD, and the only reason that failed was because Sony was retarded and they were fighting with themselves. It was the same thing with Betamax, they screwed themselves over. I just think they finally did something right this time. I'm not a Sony fanboy, i'm just a fan of innovation, and if there are two availible mediums, i want the better of the two, but thats not how it always works out.
