Help/Advice about which upgrades to buy

SirDeity

Big Geek
Hello.

I'd like to upgrade my mother's computer but I only have $200.00 to spend. Her computer is kind of old and my goal is to make it capable of running the game Battlefield 2 so that my step dad and I can play the game together a bit before I have to leave for school. I'm fairly ignorant when it comes to upgrading so I was hoping someone could give me some advice on what to get. I was thinking that I should get a better video card and increase the memory to 1GB. Anyway, I'll include the dxDiag so you can see the system specs.

Thanks for the help.

it will run BF2 now but itĺl probably be jerky, yeah your right about RAM BF2 needs 512Mb (minimum) so i would say 1Gb RAM would be better, as for your grfx card (not sure but) i think your mobo has integrated grfx (grfx card built into motherboard, so (if onboard grafx) you´ll need to check if you have a AGP slot (brown, usually nearest the proccessor, and it will probably be a X2 / X4 AGP slot)
chech the AGP slot before you buy a new grfx card.
as for RAM use this to find out which RAM you should buy

I already tried running Battlefield 2 on his computer but it wouldn't work. I went to a game support forum and was told after providing the DXDiag that the game wouldn't run specifically because the video card wasn't compatible with the game. I guess there's a very specific list of video cards that are supported by EA to work with Battlefield 2.

Anyway, thank you for the information. I'll crack open the case and see what's inside...

I looked inside the computer and didn't see any brown slots or anything saying AVG inside. I removed a memory stick so that I could see what it said on the stick and write it down. Unfortunately, the sticks didn't say what PC-type they are. There was no PC100 or PC3200 or anything of the sort. Here's everything that was on the memory sticks (they're from a Dell-built system):

(There are two sticks in the case that both say the following):

Korea 0231 256MB/8
MR16R1628AFO CM8 800 011
"http://Samsungsemi.com"

That leads me to my next question: Does this information help to determine what type of memory I'll need to purchase to upgrade to 1GB? On a side note, there were two other smaller sticks next to the two memory sticks that didn't appear to say anything on them. I doubt these were also memory sticks as I already located the two 256MB sticks and the memory sticks were a different size and appearance. However, with those other two 'mystery sticks' in place, all 4 slots are full, thus it seems my only option is to replace the two 256MB sticks with two 512MB sticks. But the question still remains what I should buy that will be compatible. With that said, I haven't yet looked at the link you provided (I will after I submit this post). But we at least know there aren't any "brown" slots anywhere and from that I assume we can see that the MOBO isn't AGP compatible...correct? Just out of curiosity, what is the current video card shown in the DXDiag?

I appreciate the help. Please continue to assist me. Thank you.

to determine wat ram speed ur computer takes, download cpuid. it will tell u the speed

try this or cpuid to test your RAM

your grfx are: NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4600

yeah unless you upgrade mobo (expensive from dell) you'll be wanting a PCI grfx card, unless you feel like a challenge and buy a new case, PSU and possibly mobo (worth doing for PCI-e (PCI Express) alone)

as for RAM use this to find out which RAM you should buy

"We're Sorry!
No products are currently available for the system you selected. Your system may require proprietary or non-standard parts. If your system requires RDRAM or Rambus technology click here."

That above portion in quotations is what I get for a response from crucial.com. I'll go try the other one now.

I see a bunch of stuff available for download at CPUID but am not sure which one I want. Can someone please help me out.

Thank you.

yeah unless you upgrade mobo (expensive from dell) you'll be wanting a PCI grfx card, unless you feel like a challenge and buy a new case, PSU and possibly mobo (worth doing for PCI-e (PCI Express) alone)

I only have about $200.00 to spend on these upgrades...

Ok I got the program downloaded. For memory it just says "Physical Memory : 512 MB (2 x 256 RDRAM )." How does this help me determine which memory upgrades to buy?

I just downloaded CPU-Z and clicked on the memory tab and see the following:
Type: RDRAM
Size: 512 MBytes
Channels #: Dual
Frequency: 397.8
FSBRAM: 4:3
Total CAS#: 9 clocks
Row to Column: 7 clocks

And also on the "SPD" tab it shows:
Max Bandwidth: PC800-40 (400 MHz)

And lastly on a note related to the video card issue, the "Mainboard" tab shows:
Graphics Interface:

Version: AGP version 2.0
Transfer Rate: 4x Max. Supported: 4x
Side Band: enabled

And for the motherboard chipset it shows the Intel i850E Rev. A3

Err...that's going to make it kinda hard to get up to 1GB. You've got RDRAM, and that ain't cheap. 512MB is going to eat up most of your budget. Upgrading your video card would be the best bet, but given the unfortunate cost of RDRAM, you're really going to have to pick one or the other. Newegg is listing a 256MB stick of RDRAM (which must be installed in pairs in virtually every situation) for about $85. And that's using 16-bit RDRAM. There's also 32-bit RDRAM, which saw some limited use. I know the Asus P4T-533 used it, as the i850E supported the stuff. However, from the sound of it, the board is likely using 16-bit stuff. The good news is that you don't have to worry about any RDRAM compatibility issues. That standard was pretty stringent, so running different manufacturers modules in the same system wouldn't be an issue.

You're going to be screwed to some extent either way, but given the age of the GeForce 4 Ti4600, you'll probably get better use out of upgrading the video card to a 6800GS or 7600GS. You can find them in AGP 8x parts, but AGP 8x will work fine with the AGP 4x standard. If it wasn't for the RDRAM, getting to 1GB would be slightly tricky at best.
