everytime i try to logon to windows it logs out, recently downloaded free-anti-virus softwarea and think this was rogue and responsible does anyone know wot i can do to logon??
Try system restore, or safe mode. you can try both by holding F8 when you turn on the computer, untill you get a list of options appear. use the arrow keys + enter to select one! what anti-virus did you install?
Safe Mode Does Not Work Just Keeps Logging Out!!! The Anti-virus Software I Downloaded Earlier Ran Using Command Prompt
YES BUT THEY ARE LOGGING OUT AS WELL I CLICK ON IT AND THEN IT SAYS "LOADING PERSONAL SETTINGS" ETC THEN AFTER BOUT 5 SECONDS IT THEN SAYS " LOGGING OFF" etc "SAVING YOUR SETTINGS THINK ITS LOOKING LIKE ILL HAVE INSTALL WINDOWS XP AGAIN!!!
Looking at your taskbar, which program loads just before Windows logs out? In those 5 seconds you have available to you, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to bring up the task manager. See what programs are running and see if you can close anything
Have you tried 'last known good configuration'? Press F8 just before Windows starts to load. You will see 'last known....' in the boot loader menu
There is only so much I can suggest without actually sitting in front of your computer. I don't think you are left with many options. Here is my lot: 1) Insert your Windows XP disk and reboot your computer. Instead of installing a fresh copy, try the repair option. If you have an XP disk that came with your computer, your computer manufacturer may have altered it. Therefore you may not have these options 2) Obtain a legit command line scanner, and stick it on a floppy drive. Select 'safe mode command prompt' from the OS boot loader, then run a scan 3) Install the hard disk into another computer, and run an antivirus check on it 4) Completely reinstall Windows Please read my Windows XP Security Guide for future reference
woa, carefull with shutton54321's option 3!!! If you run a virus scan on a drive which contains an operating system (that isnt currently running) then the virus scanner my remove critical files, and then windoze will refuse to boot when you put the hard drive back I would reccomend that you put the drive in another computer, backup all documents (make sure you dont copy any exe's) put the drive back and re-install windoze! (after trying option 1 & 2 above). Good luck!
Agreed. Not only that, but if critical system files are infected in the first place, you usually need to reinstall. For future reference, a good, legitimate anti-virus that really is free for home use is AVG Free.
[ot]I was using AVG free, I had XP Pro & Windows ME [for 16 bit games, borrowed the disc + license off a friend] on two separate partitions. Got a Virus while running XP, which infected anything executable on the ME partition! (if i had been running ME when i executed the *dodgey* exe it wouldnt have been as bad, as ME couldnt read the NTFS partition!) [/ot]
[ot] I just don't rate AVG Free that much at all. It didn't protect you against this virus did it? And when you tried to fix the problems, AVG stole all of the critical Windows files! I know it's free, but that's no excuse really is it? Avast Antivirus is superior in every way, and is also free. You'll find a link on my sig [/ot]
[ot] I suppose i have to be honest now, here's the full story. It was a long time ago, a dark and stormy night like no man [or woman ] had ever seen. The ice'cy rain smashed against my small window like a whip.... just kidding, but it was quite awhile ago! I was a complete Grade-A nooby (i thought making shortcuts to C:\ @ school made me cool ffs!), and what does any noob trying to be cool do? google hacking tools of course!!! I eventually found, Mail bomberz, locusts (sign an email addy up2 thousands of mailing lists) and a cool looking nuker that did F'All, you would be surprised how much C24P comes up when goolin hacking! [I also found a copy of a really nice 'cookbook' made by a pirate who goes by the name "Jolly rodger" , You are not meant to understand that last sentence!] Of course in the spirit of being a real noob, i did this without antivirus, firewall, anti spy or adware using internet explorer on a *shifty* copy of windows XP (no updates!). [didnt install anti-v for a couple of weeks after that!]. One thing about avast (and avg) is that they tend to identify 'toolz' as viruses/wormz so you cant be sure if the file will actually do you harm! Norton AV has a Hacktoolz category, but you have to pay for a :swear: subscription! (Norton Internet security suite is a very nice package tho). @megamaced when fixing up computers i tend to use avast aswell, as its a lot nicer looking! If you fix it up with THIS skin it beacomes very simple to use, avast also tells them if something 'bad' happens with voice! [i need to make my own sounds, as the defualt one's can cause panic!] [/ot]
