Help with reception and recording of TV on computer

Hi. I'm new to the forum so I'm not entirely sure if this is the right section to post my question in, so let me know if it isn't!

I'm planning on buying a second sky digibox to be able to watch and record television programmes from my PC. I also want to be able to connect a VCR so I can a) transfer videos onto CD-Rom and b) to capture images from video tape. I have a graphic card that - I think - is OK and a CD/DVD-burner, but I imagine I will need some other hardware / software for the reception of television and connecting the VCR?!

I had a look at different Hauppauge television cards but am really unsure how to proceed.

Is there anyone here who has had prior experience with this kind of thing and could give me some pointers? Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)
 
I was wondering are you using freeview or you subscribe to Sky?

because if you subscribe to Sky you should highly consider trying out Sky+ I have it! I can say I've not had any major problems with it! You can transfer recorded programs by connecting to a DVD recorder!

For freeview the Hauppauge Nova-T is a good cheap option around £60, I'v seen a little clip of a tv show someone recorded with one! All I can say it was excellent quality! you may require a aerial booster though!

I subscribe to Sky but because of the cost involved with Sky + was thinking about getting skymultiroom, which only involves the purchase of another digibox and a £10 fee per month.

I also need the image capture function for videos, as this is something I need for my work...

Is the Hauppauge Nova-T something I could use for Sky digital, video image capture and copying of old videos onto CD-Rom or will I need a different system?

Sorry about the many questions - it's all rather new to me... :o

Skymultiroom would be a good option, but consider what package are you on? If you love sports like me :) subscribe to 2 premium channels (any package over £33 I think) that means you don’t have to pay the extra £10 a month for sky+...you can still get a skymultiroom for extra £10/month!

Try to look out for Sky special offers on the net, I got sky+ dig box for around £100 plus £1 for delivery, but that was last year!

If you want to record your old video recording, you will need to get a TV capture card, as the Hauppauge Nova-T is a digital freeview receiver only! Something like the WinTV-PVR-usb2 http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/products/data_pvrusb2.html

Image capture function should not be problem; you can use the Print screen button on the keyboard, or use another program if you want!

If you really want, you can get a DVD recorder (but alot more expensive) it would be so much easier to use! You should be able to transfer your videos to DVD and if you want, then copy then from the DVD to computer to edit!
 
I'm only on the basic package, you see... Still, £100 is pretty cheap. Will have to look into that.

And thanks for the link to the right TV capture card - that's a great help. Will the one card cover everything then - meaning, can I just connect a digibox and my VHS to the computer and it will work?!

I actually have a DVD recorder on my computer, only I've never used it because the CD-ROMs were so much cheaper!
