I read the sticky and a few posts and I still cannot get my network to work .
This is for my home .It is only temporary really . I am trying to tranfer my 7 or so gigs of info from my old PC to the new one I built with this forums help .
I am running win2000 on the old pc and xp home on this pc . I have a netgear mMR814 v2 router ,not using the wireless feature , and I am on cable interent .What is the fastest simplest way to transfer my files ? They are mostly pics. I have CD-DVD burners on both PCs . Thanks - L40 :ff:
 
Do you have Network card on both the computers? If yes then use ethernet wire, Assign Win2000 to recieve IP automatically. Put the particular folder in sharing. Map from other computer and copy it.
 
Yes they both have network cards . Ethernet ,network cable same thing ? How/where do I make w2000 receive IP ? Thanks L40

just plug ethernet wire in both of the computers directly. You will see an icon on both the computers showing local area network connected. select the properties of your connection and in the properties of TCP/IP, you can set your win2000 to recieve automatically recieve IP adress. Put that folder into sharing.......for that Right click on the folder select share and then you will understand.

Restart your computers......Map your folder from other computer.........Go to my computer >Tool > Map Network Drive > Browse and select the folder from there.

I did this long time ago, let me know if you are facing any problem coz I m not sure if I m missing any step here.
 
If automatically recieve didnt work then assign them something like>>set computer A to 192.168.1.1 and computer B
to 192.168.1.2

Yes, your computers won't be able to communicate if they don't have an IP address on your LAN. They receive one automatically if they're both connected to a router, but if they're connected directly without a DHCP server then you'll need to manually assign an IP.

The settings that should work are:
IP for PC A: 192.168.0.100
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 (this is nearly always the same)
Default gateway 192.168.0.1 (doesn't really matter as there's no router connected)

IP for PC B: 192.168.0.101
Same settings as PC A.

Then set up file sharing mentioned above and you should be fine.
