hi all,
im new to this forum ,
currently i have these following specs:
P4 1.7GHZ
1 GIG RAM 512 X 512 PC3200 PNY
NVIDIA GEFORCE 6200 256MB AGP 64bit
120 SATA HDD
i was just wondering is this a okish gaming computer?
games which wil run GTA san anderas well and maybe far cry?
where is my room for improvment?
yes my CPU needs updating but what to?
also my gfx could be better or could it?
please post your thoughts about my pc ( mainly my CPU and GFX card )
btw my mobo in ASROCK!
yes asrock!

Its not suitable for the latest games to be playable without a lot of eye candy being turned off. For older games its decent for it to be playable.

If you want to upgrade your CPU you'll also need to replace the rest of your components like motherboard as well. An Athlon 64 would be a suitable gaming processor, that will require a socket 939 motherboard, or the new AM2 socket for the latest Athlon 64s.

Then you'll need to upgrade your graphics card to fit the PCI-E motherboard. This will probably be a 6600GT, 7600GT or equivelent.

So really, I think you're better off keeping your current system and if you want to play heavy games then buy a gaming PC for about £700 depending on components.

Yeah I'd say the CPU and Graphics Card could do with updating to give you a smoother experience in games.

It depends what resolution and detail level you want to play at, as a basis a 6600GT is a good card, it performs okay for most games without breaking the bank.

i play all my games on 800x600 nothing higher,
my mobo is ASRock -> Products -> P4VT8+
also could i get a intel p4 3.0 on that?
and if i play games like gta sa and max payne 2 and counter strike source do i really need to get a new card?
thanks guys!

Your system should handle most of the older games alright, its the new ones like FEAR, BF2 etc that it will struggle with. You need to find a balance in the graphic settings of the game between quality and performance.

And yes, you can upgrade to a 3GHz P4 with that motherboard. You will need a new heatsink and cooler though. Unless you buy a retail CPU instead of OEM, in which case it will include a stock cooler.

If you're looking at higher detail settings, an upgraded video card would help, but if that's not a big deal to you, the 6200 isn't terrible. With 1GB of RAM, you're in a decent position there, and with GeForce 6800 prices dropping, picking one up for $130-150 would do wonders if you started to look at FEAR or Doom 3.
