IDE Hard drive not detected by XP via USB

Hi all,

Just wondering if you can help me here. I have a USB to SATA/IDE hard drive adapter and I have been using it to try and copy data from an IBM Deskstar 80gb ide hard disk which I had in a previous desktop pc under Win xp. When I plug in the usb adapter to my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop it picks it up. Also in device manager under disk drives it picks it up as 'Disk Drive' with the following properties;

Disk: Disk1
Type: Dynamic
Status: Foreign
Partition Type: Master Boot Record (MBR)
Capacity: 0
Unallocated Space: 0
Reserved Space: 0


Windows explorer doesnt pick it up or assign a drive letter. I had a look in Computer Management>Disk Management and rescanned for disk but it could only pick it up as a 'Disk 1, Dynamic, Foreign' with an exclamation mark, i right clicked on it and chose 'import foreign disk' but i get the following windows error; 'The operation did not complete. Click the System Event Log for more info on the error'.

I also set the jumpering on the disk to device 1 slave and also with the jumpering cleared and still no luck. Any input or ideas is greatly appreciated.

THen check the event viewer.... RightClick MyComputer > Manage > Events...jst look at the errors, copy and paste the errors hea with the event IDs n all..

If its a matter of assigning a drive letter, you can do that manually. My laptop sometimes doesn't assign letters to flash drives. Go to control panel, administrative tools, computer management, and then under disk management you can right click and select "change drive letter and paths" and there you can assign a free letter to the USB drive. Hope this helps.

ooops, re read your post...doesn't seem like what i suggested would work...maybe its a problem with the USB adapter...did it come with any software drivers?

Thanks so much for your posts, I sorted my problem anyway, I just popped the drive into my friends tower and burnt everything to dvds.
