Yes it is possible, depending on how damaged the file is. Do you know how it became damaged?

I know there are lots of programs out there that can fix corrupt archives, however I can only think of WinRAR at the moment.

Open the tar file in WinRAR and click 'Repair' on the toolbar

Well yes, there is a software program which can easily repair your corrupt TAR file in very short time. I'm using it, it's really awesome.
