Just 2 options

Hi,

Its my first time posting message here. So hopefully i will get a response soon. Well i am bit puzzled in selecting my Graphics card. Wel i have only 2 options here. Either i shall buy

1)ATI 9200 SE 64 mb card for US$ 72 OR
2)GForce 4 MX 440-8X 128 mb card for US$ 60.

I will be using intel 865XX motherboard with probably Pentium 4 processor. So guyzzzzzzzzzzzzz help me out. i have read many views but can't reach a decision.

Both aren't that great, but the 9200SE has DirectX 8 support, where as the GF4MX only has DX7. Based on that alone, I'd go for the 9200SE.

IMHO, you should get a Radeon 9100 128mb. It's got faster clocks than the 9200se, twice the memory bandwidth, and two simultaneous rendering pipes (the 9200 only has 1 pipe). It fully supports DX8.1, and it's exactly the same price as the 9200 you linked to. If you absolutely cannot get another card besides the two you've listed, go for the 9200se. It's a little better than the alternative, and if you throw a fan on it you can even overclock it a bit.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have searched and found a 3rd option and i.e Ge Force FX 5200 for US$ 88. So shall i buy the 9200 SE or give a thought to FX 5200. Another question is that whether the brand make any big difference in the performance of card, like the cards are coming with different brands i.e Asus, MSI, Chaintek etc. Another thing is that i am living outside USA so getting things online is not a good option for me specially when the shipping charges are added.

Again, not a great card, but it's better than the GF4MX.

MSI and Hercules are my picks if you want a good card, although Hercules tends to be a bit pricey.
If you tell us what country you live in, we might be able to tell you what on-line stores you can get stuff from. If you budget is $100 USD, look around as the Radeon 9600 cards (plain Radeon 9600, not Pro or XT) since some can be had for that price or slightly less online.

I am from Pakistan and my budget is US$ 100 inclusive of all cost. I searched online but didn't got any good card. There are some good cards available but when i add the shipping cost, they become out of my reach. However i will appreciate if you refer me a good card meeting my requirments and specially the budget.

I'm not sure, but you might see if Amazon.com has anything. I don't really go to them, but they do ship internationally, and have a good reputation. If you can find a GeForce 3 or Radeon 8500 within your budget, those are a little older, but are still pretty decent by today's standards. Amazon does have cards that are used, so you might be able to get something a little nicer.

I should've asked this earlier, but what are you using the card for? Gaming or just so you have a display. If you're not gaming, get an i865 board with Intel's Extreme Graphics 2 on it. You can always add a video card later if you just need something to give you a visual for the time being.

Well currently i am using Asus TUSI-M motherboard with built in SiS graphics card. The card can run NFS Porche well with minimum grahics. but when it comes to NFS 6, the things totally changes. Similarly for other games like NFS 7, C&C Generals etc, the card cann't do anything. So primarily i need a graphic card just for games.
As the current motherboard dont have an AGP Slot so i had to replace motherboard, processor and RAM. Becoz of this my budget for the Graphics card is reduced. I will be purchasiung Intel 865 motherboard as this is the only motherboard currently available here for 8X AGP support.
So whether Intel's Extreme Graphics 2 can run the above mentioned games smoothly with Pentium 4 processor, or i shall get a graphic card. the card available in the market are Geforce 4 mx, FX series and only 2 vendors have ATI Radeon. So at the end the conclusion is that i need a card for games and for this i am changing my m/b, processor and ram.

Intel Extreme Graphics 2 is another budget integrated solution. It'll work, but it's not the best you can get in that category. If they're available, Asus has a motherboard based on the Radeon 9100 IGP. It's a dual-channel motherboard chipset with an integrated Radeon 9200 GPU. It's the best performing solution if you want to save $$. The is the Asus P4R800-VM. Amazon is listing this board for a little under $100 USD. It's a good performing board with the current pinnacle in integrated graphics. You can always snag a better AGP card later on.

Thanks. As the Asus motherboard is not available in the market, i am going to purchase the i865 motherboard and wait for a good graphic card coming to my range.
Thanks for your help
